Catching up a bit here, I've never been an In Flames fan, so the last thing I heard from them came from 'The Jester Race' I think. So I gave the new album a listen and, oh yeah that's pretty bad. You can hear the various influences, but overall it sounds like metal core or nu metal. And not that good at that. (Each element might be pretty good on it's own, but put together it's just bad.)
On top of everything I swear it sounds over processed or something as well. A bit of 'loudness war' and possibly some post processing? I'm not a sound tech, but I swear I've heard this sort of effect before.
I'm a big proponent of the idea that a certain amount of 'imperfections' actually makes a recording actually *better* than it would be otherwise. Think of it as the 'uncanny valley' for sound if everything is 'too perfect'.
