UScript is fine for a learning tool. This is not saying it's limited or too simplistic, but it's a bit more... high level than straight up C++ would be. Easier to read. The concepts of OOP are hard enough to learn for some without having to worry about excessive pointers and header files, which can really make the ordeal frustrating.
I started out with chimeric, browncow, and UTP/Blandest here pointing me in the right directions.
Besides that, the inf code itself has it's share of wild tricks to show you what can be done.
