It's your personal preference. Both have their ups and downs I believe. Just try both and see what you like more.

Speaking of renderers, has anyone managed to get UT2003 Direct3D running on full HD resolution (1920x1080)? The game crashes every time I try doing that. OpenGL works fine there, but it doesn't behave properly when handling certain shaders.

The OpenGL renderer for UT2004 comes with the x64 patch, and it's always there for UT2003.
About ups and downs, just try both yourself and you'll notice them :p But I remember that there was an issue where all the dropped weapons would become white when fading out, then the UDamage would become dark purple, and there were some issues with alt-tabbing out of the game. I don't remember which renderer does which, though.

Ok, I will have to look at both of them but right now I like Direct3D 9 since it does not mess up the font and it has full shadow option. OpenGL only has blob and it has messed up font.

Yes, DX is better for both UT2003 and UT2004. In fact, for any of the Unreal/UT series games, I'm only using OpenGL for Unreal and UT (original or GOTY).

No, they're alternative methods for doing the same thing. And a lot of games do use OpenGL, worth noting are Unigine tech demos that run on both renderers and use the latest features - you can't see much difference between the renderers.
Just that generally Windows is by Microsoft, DirectX is by Microsoft, Linux is by the opensource community, OpenGL is by the opensource community, and most games are targeted at Windows, and the developers can't be bothered to implement a few different renderers.

Well, all I can say is that I think developers should only focus their attention on one renderer (DX or OpenGL I don't care). No point wasting time on two, when they can work to stabilise one...

That causes problems as well, since if you use one renderer, you break multiplatform compatibility. For example, Linux runs only OpenGL natively. However, Xbox only runs D3D natively. Even more, WinXP runs only up to D3D9 while Win7 runs up to D3D11 (but WinXP can run and benefit from all OGL versions I believe). So having at least three renderers is a good thing.
