Any way to fix mouse acceleration on Win7?

Hey all, long time player of the UT series here. Played them all until about a year ago when UT3 kind of died out. Been trying a few other games (even WoW ) but the itch for some good frags never went away.

So I tried UT3 again but that game is still deader than dead, unless you don't mind sitting in IRC for hours waiting for a match. Also tried UT2004 but I can't stand the floatiness, the hitscan and the shieldgun anymore. Then I tried UT GOTY and got into it again! Had fun smacking some bots around trying to get a feel for it, but I am horrible at it now. And the main reason is the mouse acceleration!

I just can't do any fast, twitchy mouse movements without completely overshooting my target, which is extremely frustrating especially for the moving combowhore that I am (or used to be).

I've googled my @ss off trying to find a fix for this, but had no luck. You guys are my last hope. If I can't solve this I will have to say goodbye to UT forever... :(

I have already disabled "enhance pointer precision" in Windows 7's mouse settings. It gave a slight improvement but it's nowhere near good enough. Ticking or unticking DirectInput in UT's settings only makes a difference to the mouse speed for me.

Please let me know of any other suggestions you guys might have...

Thanks in advance!

Have you switced Mouse smoothing off from Imput tab? Also having VSync turned on causes noticeable imput lag.

Hey thanks for your reply.

Yup, mouse smoothing is turned off. I tried both vsync enabled and disabled. Also tried the OpenGL renderer instead of the Direct3D one. No dice.

Also notice I said I had mouse acceleration, not lag. It responds to my mouse movements as quick as nessecary. It just responds in the wrong way.

If you're unsure of what I mean, picture this: Suppose I move my mouse 30 cm to the right at a slow speed. This will turn me around exactly 360 degrees. Now I move the mouse 30 cm to the right again, only this time way faster. Now I turn a lot more, perhaps even 540 degrees. This is acceleration at work, and it completely kills my accuracy.

Any other suggestions? :x

You're screwed unless you go back to XP or possibly vista. I've also googled the hell out of this topic and there is nothing. I've just learned to live with the small amount of default OS accel (I still dunno why MS does that). Sorry :{

Apparently your cursor moves slowly and then continues its course quickly.
As if you were under water.

I have fixed the problem!

As a last resort I went to Logitech's site and downloaded their 64 bit setpoint drivers (I still use an MX518 :)). Back in the day they gave more problems than they solved, but now they seem to work fine! It allows you to completely disable acceleration in its settings.

Aaaah, so nice to be able to hit multiple shocks in a row again! :)

Darkmedor, thanks for posting the links to that UT site. I dug up an updated OpenGLdrv.dll (last modified date: 11-11-2009) from it and copied your opengl settings to my ini. It did nothing to solve my acceleration problem but I was looking for an updated renderer anyway.

Defeat, perhaps you can use those mouse drivers to solve the problem on your end as well. Good luck!

So... You guys know any good european servers I should pay a visit? :D

Weeeeee!

Ah, the mouse drivers would explain it. I thought I remembered something somewhere that said it shouldn't be a problem playing UT in Win7 64-bit, then I ran across this thread. I'm using an MX518 as well (with a backup still in the box).:)

If you have win7 64 you can't play on server who have update there anticheat UTDC.

Yeah I have found this too. Luckily there are a few servers close to me that don't use UTDC.

Ah, the mouse drivers would explain it.

Just to be clear, the acceleration is most definitely a problem with Win7. If you don't have a Logitech mouse (or a Razer, I hear their drivers have similar functionality) you can simply forget about ever being able to aim accurately. No matter how good your mouse is otherwise.

But yeah, MX518 FTW! :D

Well I'm using still using the SetPoint drivers as I said earlier. I used to use the CPL fix on XP (on which cheese's fix is based) but it didn't seem to work on 7 for me. But this might be because of the difference in screen refresh rate as explained in cheese's readme (I was still on a CRT monitor in XP times).

I have a bit of programming experience, so I might be able to make a little program that sits in the system tray and allows you to toggle acceleration on or of, taking refresh rate into account.

I'll post here if I ever get around to it.
