A new breed of humans

A New Breed Of Humans (ANBOH) is a game of fast-paced real-time tactical combat, interwoven with management of groups of life-like characters, interacting and, in time, developing relationships. ANBOH features squads of freely acting soldiers fighting it out with diverse enemies on large fields of battle, a branching storyline with multiple endings depending on the player's actions.

Take the role of Jacques Duval, infamous French mercenary, on a routine security and surveillance assignment to the isolated island of Kakrahua. From the first moments after landing at the air strip, it becomes evident that something is amiss. Where is the receiving committee? Or the air strip personnel for that matter? Explore the island to discover what evil is afoot. Will you save the simple and superstitious local populace from the menace threatening their existence or will you attempt to save your own sorry hide? Put the local yokels under your veteran friends' competent leadership or use them as a diversion for your elite forces, the choice is yours.

What do we add to the project?
The current team consists of a group of six university students from southern Sweden (northern Europe). Our major is computer science, and we are currently taking a game project course which will last until the end of may. As such, we have a lot of coding experience and a dedication that can't be denied and won't dimish. The game was designed by us during a previous course, but has since then been revised from the ground up to better suit the timeframe we are in. The design is quite complex, but well thought through.

What do we need?
We are mainly programmers, with only basic skills in concept art, photoshopping, and modelling. We are therefore interested in artists, modellers, level designers and most of all animators.

What kind of working relationship do we offer?
Nothing in the game is really set in stone, and all of us are nice people that are able to accept criticism and change. Therefore, you will be able to comment on anything and we will hopefully be able to have a dialogue about any parts of the design of the game. The more specific the opinion is, the more likely we are not to have already decided about in and thus we will be more inclined to listen to proposals. However, as we are the core group of the team, we will be able to have local meetings. We will also be the ones finally deciding what the design looks like.

Why should anybody be interested in joining our team?
The game has a number of unique features. It is basically an RTS, but with a number of changes compared to other games in the genre. The game concept is our own idea from the very start, so this is not another AvP mod. :)

Similarly to Ground Control, there is no focus on resource gathering. The player controls a number of soldiers - somewhere between 10 and 40, depending on the mission and how far into the game he has come - and they are the most important resource in the game. Before (and during) each mission, the player must take care to place them in smaller squads of perhaps 4-9 soldiers. He must equip them with the right types of equipment, as in the UFO games for example, but more importantly: the player needs to make sure that the soldiers' personalities and traits match. Some soldiers will like some soldiers but dislike others, and this will affect how the squad will function.

Also, some of them are more prone to follow their instincts, while some may easily fall for group pressure, or the player's favorite - doing what the squad leader tells them. You see, the player gives the orders to the squad leader, but it is still up to the squad leader to do what he sees fit considering the circumstances he is in. In addition, just because the squad leader gives orders to the members of the squad, they aren't necessarily going to follow those orders. The unique group dynamics will reduce the amount of time the player will spend micromanaging and instead let him focus on the tactics.

How to contact us
We use a number of different communication methods, and we are all quite fluent in speaking English.
  • For extremely (;)) quick communication, we sometimes use Ventrilo which is a voice chat application.
  • For quick communication, we mainly use IRC: #kanonmat @ quakenet.
  • For more long term communication, we use our forum which currently can not be accessed by any outsiders.
  • For stuff that is meant to last forever, such as the game design document, we have a wiki at our disposal which we use a lot. It can be found here: http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~d00berg/Wikka/wikka.php4?wakka=ANewBreedOfHumans
And, of course, we will be checking this thread for replies.
