many surfaces don't work with the optical, it's good to have a pad around, good thing is that you'll never have to replace the pad, i mean, you can even use a sheet of paper, not white paper, but some old paper iwth some text on it, as the "pad" only problem is that it's got no mass and will move around, so if you want a real cheap ass solution, tape an 8x10 sheet of paper, any paper, with text on it, on the surface of your desk, advantage being that it's free, and plus, you can work seamlessly on your desk, i know since my desk is small and cluttered, when i have to put books on it, the mousepad gets in the way of it being level, very annoying, sheet of paper won't. if you wanna get a pad, get any generic pad, since dust never gets caught, you won't have any frustrations until that top sheet of fabric on the pad starts to detatch from the rubber foam underneath. very durable, i love optical. my pad right now (since i came home for winter break) is an old bank statment. =)
