as strange as this may sound:
have you tried it without a pad yet?
if the surface of your desk is very 1337, it might actually work better than any overpriced super-pad.

Doesn't work, the surface is shiny.
I'm using a really cheap one-color fabric pad right now. I want to know if there's something better?

I use a retinal-sensitive, laser-guided mouse. A sensor can tell where my eye is at and it moves the mouse pointer accordingly. When I want to click or double-click something I just yell out, “The aliens are coming!” once or twice, depending on the number of clicks I want.

Do Optical Mice have to be battery powered too?

Last cordless mouse I bought only lasted two days on the batteries (tho' I was playing Diablo II, so...........probably a few more left mouse clicks than usual)

Diehard is the only way to go. A little heavy, but it's a great workout.

Well, I am using the back of a Crescent, #300 drawing board right now, has a fairly smooth action, and not as jerky as my desktop was. Woodgrain, even fake woodgrain seems to mess a bit with the optics. Keeping the mouse "feet" and surface clean however, is the most important factor from my experience. Even on a bad surface, if the mouse "feet" or pads on the bottom of the mouse are kept clean, it makes a real difference in performance.

I've got them on both wrists :/
One on the left for playing ut, and then the other on the right from the editor.

I've got an Intellimouse or somesuch. It is an optical mouse, but being an optical mouse does not necessarily entail more buttons. Also, it needs no batteries and seems to run about the same off a mousepad as on.
