The Ball : Pehua is a rather unique modification for Unreal Tournament 3 and it has a pretty impressive lineup of talent behind it. Naturally, we wanted to find out a bit more about it and Hourences was kind enough to give us a few answers.

BU: You've hinted at including a few enemies in possible future versions. Will you incorporate them as a part of each puzzle or are you looking to change The Ball into more of an action-combat modification?

Hourences: As it is planned right now, and this can change of course, they will be both part of some puzzles, as just there for some action. It is my intention to go for a more action combat approach later on, though the puzzling will remain a very important element. Basically like Tomb Raider has always done it. Most of its levels are movement puzzles, but there are a few enemies around to keep the speed and the tension in the gameplay. That's the direction I want to go into.

And by the way, we are still looking for a skilled and dedicated character artist who can help us out with part 2!

The first pic below is a screenshot taken for the design document to show the basic idea and visual concept for the project. The two on the right are some pics of the mod in its current state.

I played through part of this and it's pretty cool

I was a huge portal fan and i think innovative puzzle games like these are a nice change of pace from fragging

I will play through the whole first part when i have more time

Keep up the good work guys...this is the kind of stuff that makes my 60.00 seem a little better spent

I've been looking for a really cool SP mod and this one certainly looks awesome.

I've downloaded it and I'll try to get around to playing in a day or so, I can't wait! D:

The only problem with this mod is the lack of ability to save the game in progress.
Does UT3 (or the unreal engine even) have the mechanisims to allow for traditional FPS game saves? As it is now, single player information is only recorded between matches in the campaign.

I swear, I had an idea similar to this months ago where it was more of a team game, and the ball was 100 feet tall with spikes on it.
What I get for sitting on my butt. :)

I've found at least one checkpoint. I imagine there could be more in larger maps. I can see where it could be a problem for only partially playing and then exiting. This could be solved by gradually unlocking a selectable maplist as you progress. You'd have to start from the beginning of the last map you played but it's still better than starting completely over.

I'm still waiting for a Tomb Raider style game -without- the enemies. ;)

But this sounds interesting at any rate, checking it out.

yeah, I know about the checkpoint, but what I mean is you can't save in the middle of a map (It took me a fair amount of time the first try to get through it) so you have to start from the beginning if you don't complete it. Maybe some information could be saved in your profile (or to an ini) when you reach a checkpoint?

Yeah that would be great, but it sounds really difficult to implement... The current level can technically be completed in 8 minutes if you go for maximum speed so I dont find it a super huge deal, yet. I can imagine if future levels are longer or more difficult, it might become one..
There are two checkpoints btw, the pan flute and the little cave everytime is the checkpoint.

the next room after the one where you extend two rods to make a ramp for the ball to hit a button (i.e. the puzzle after the first one), the first time I tried it it glitched on me and after pushing the two buttons, they were both down but the door didn't open. I tried a second time and it worked fine. Not exactly sure what happened.

While it was very short, I thought the whole idea was really persuasive. I really enjoyed playing this while using "behindview 1". My main issue with this "mod" is the fact that the ball doesn't hurt the player, I don't really mind the fact that you don't have falling damage, but I find myself using the ball attract 95% of the time since the ball push is almost useless.

Also, removing collision with the player and the ball was a useless feature in my case, since in almost every situations I've witnessed, I never got to a point were I was stuck in there and the ball was the cause. It made things even more unrealistic. I'd just remove that feature TBH. Using the push ball versus the ball when you attract it would make it more fun and "Realistic", or challenging if you prefer since this mod doesn't aim at realism.

Really fun though, I'd hope that the ball kick would case more momentum or something, or maybe I just suck at it... Really fun mod, remind me a lot of these "trial" levels back in UT2004, which makes me want to do some Level Design for this mod.

BTW, I think this mod should have "behindview 1" automatically enabled, playing this mod in first person isn't really enjoyable, the player scale and speed in UT3 versus the ball scale makes it all feel like I'm playing "Giant hammer with tiny ants".
