Alright, after the great success of last year's JBIII tournament last spring, we're going to have another this year, using JB2004. This tournament will be open to both clans and individual players. Invidual players will be divided up into several community teams which will from then on act just like a clan. Leadership for those teams will either be selected by the players placed into them or selected by an admin if there is no clear selection.

So, here are the preliminary list of rules, this can be added to or edited at any time before we start the tourney. If you think a change should be made or something needs to be clarified, just speak up in this thread.

All matches will use normal weapons.

You may signup in this thread.

Signup
  • For clans, you must have commitments to play from and list at least 5 players before signing up. You must leave an e-mail AND an IRC channel/AIM/MSN/XFire contact. You should have at least 6 players (5 and a reserve) by the time the tournament begins, preferably 7-8.
  • Individuals leave an e-mail and agree to either be in the #utjb channel before matches or be on the AIM/MSN/XFire chat that the leader chooses (to prevent the leader from having to communicate in 4 different ways with their 4 players, for instance).
  • Individuals will be split up into several community teams before the tourney and a leader for each will be either elected, or selected by an admin if there is no clear consensus among the team.
Matches
  • Unless another server becomes available, all matches will take place on the DefCon JB2004 Mothership server (where Sunday lockdowns are held). It is located on the East Coast of the US. If you can't deal with the ping/lag you receive there, don't sign up. Provisions will not be made for excessive lag.
  • Each team will select a map and inform the other team at least 15 minutes before play begins, to allow for last-minute downloads so the game doesn't get delayed. Players on 56k should get all the maps on the Mothership well in advance.
  • The teams will then play a "home-and-home", with 20 minute maps (no overtime/score limit except in tie breakers, see below). Any map that has been on the Mothership for at least a week is fair game.
  • Team leaders must contact each other, using the "live" sign-up contact info or preferably meeting in #utjb on irc.enterthegame.com, at least 15 minutes before the match is scheduled to begin. If a team has not shown at least 4 players on the server by 15 minutes after the match is set to begin, the team that has shown the proper number of players may request a forfeit, if this is at least the second time this has happened for the given match. Both teams may also agree to wait in this case, or simply to reschedule. In the case of neither team having the correct number of players, the same rules apply only neither team is charged their one "strike". Even if after the deadline one team manages to get a 5th player, the team that still has 4 is not charged a strike. Patience and cooperation is encouraged in all cases.
  • If at all possible an admin will be available to spectate the match and manage pauses, if not clan leaders may be given an admin pass. Pauses for dropped players are allowed, but if a player does not reconnect within a reasonable amount of time (no more than 5 minutes max), play proceeds with one team down a player. If possible each clan should have a reserve player spectating ready to jump in if a player is dropped.
  • Hiding is not cheating, it is a team's responsibility to track down someone who just puts up a tent in the closing minutes while their team is ahead. Switch camping of any kind is also not cheating (or even "lame" IMHO), it is a team's responsibility to defend their own switch. Using map bugs is cheating. A team may forfeit the game, or in severe cases for clan teams be ejected from the tournament (community teams will not be held responsible for the actions of a player, just that player), if they exploit map bugs (including any sort of leaving the intended play boundaries) or us aimbots, invisible skins, etc.
  • At the end of the match both leaders must submit the results if an admin was not present, all team members should attempt to take end score screenshots so disputes can be handled reliably.
Scheduling
  • Teams will be assigned another team to play against for each week of the tournament, they will then be in charge of scheduling their own matches (at least 48 hours in advance and notification to admins required) for whatever day of the week works best for both teams.
  • Scheduling is flexible to a certain extent, but teams should make their best effort to stay on schedule. If group play goes over too long matches may result in a default loss to both teams (with warning well in advance).
  • Sundays are off-limits, for lockdowns.
  • Matches will be a time that is convenient for Europeans (as they make up the majority of this community), but not so early in the evening that Americans cannot play. Unless both team leaders agree, the starting time of the match should be between 20:00 GMT and 22:00 GMT (3-5PM EST).
  • Admins will make their best effort to announce scheduled fixtures as soon as possible, but keep in mind that the first team to submit a particular time will get the server for that time slot.
Scoring
  • Each home-and-home series counts as one "match", the winner is whichever team scores the most captures in both maps combined. In non-elimination (group play) matches, ties simply count as ties. In elimination rounds tie breaker is the result of a third 20 minute match (with overtime if needed), with the map selected by the higher seed.
  • In group play a win is 3 points, a tie is 1.
  • The number of groups and teams in each group, and the structure of the elimination rounds, will be determined by the number of teams participating.
Along with this we will need a few trusted admins to help out. It's ok to be an admin and also play in the tourney, we will make sure that there is only one admin per team, and during their matches another neutral admin will oversee. Admins will be responsible for dividing up the different matches so that one is present at every match. If you are an admin you don't have to have a reliable schedule, but you do have to be able to say at least a couple of days in advance that you absolutely will be able to show up, and follow through. If you'd like to be an admin just speak up in this thread. I'd prefer community regulars, but it's open to anyone.

Yeah that'd be great. With enough teams we could even divide it up and have a final match between the NA and Euro champions. Right now NA players have to play at a bad time, and Euro players have to play on a "bad" server for them.

UzP may be able to config 1, maybe even 2 of our servers.
Also i could perhaps admin if needed, so long as I'm not playing

edit:

I spoke to our server provider, ForceServers
He said he would be able to have 4/5 UK servers if needed but he would want some income, he reckons about £110. Not sure whether thats any use to you though.

iJB is actually quite a bit of fun, but not what we're doing here. This reminds me that I've kind of left everyone hanging as far as when we might start. I'm currently on break from school, next week is the beginning of the term so I'll be BUSY. I'm hoping to get things started the week after that. I think we can manage about 8 teams at the moment, which is enough to have some fun with.

iJB is awesome fun until people start shooting out of jail :\

What of asymmetric maps (Gauntlet/Eternal are the only ones that spring to mind)? 10 minutes a side?

Asymmetric maps: play 20 minutes, the team that doesn't choose the map chooses color/side, so if you've got a problem with the balance of a map don't choose it, and if the other team does theoretically they're handing you the advantage. Of course IMO there's little advantage in either Gauntlet or EternalCaves for one side or the other but that's up to the teams to decide for themselves.

*gets in a muddle with his calendar*

What date is that?

Do you want me to post news about the start of the tourney, and when?
Do you want me to post news about having space remaining for more players?

Yeah if we're going to use the DefCon server we should probably hold off until things are resolved. When that happens maybe a news post that it's the last week for signups or something like that?

I've just set up a JB server using version b from the main JB website, and added the classic map pack and a few other maps from nali city. Slapped it on map rotation and it can be found ut2004://213.249.231.5:7777 Its based in the UK so should be better for the europeans amoungst us.. Feel free to go play on it! :D

PS: Lets get this tourney started :D

We'll have a check of the Mothership (in New York again) in about an hour at the lockdown, if that goes well I'd like to announce the last week to enter, then forge ahead.

OK, the JB2004 tournament is getting closer and closer.

Seeing Birelli doesn't have the time, and Boost and me are practically taking over the Tournament organisation, we did have a good look at the general rules setup by Bireli. If it's up to us we would like to rewrite some of the the General Rules. We think it will be clearer to the players and teams.

Let me know if you agree on this. But be quick please, we only have a couple of days left. I got a new set of General Rules ready. ;)

The Games
Instead of 2 games of 20 minutes (overtime OFF), we would prefer 3 games of 15 minutes (overtime ON). It's more convenient to the players if they can play their normal games. The 3rd map is never useless, and can be the deciding factor at the end of the first round.

The Schedule
The tournament schedule is already completely different from then stated in the General Rules.

The Map Choice
Both teams will choose one map, the third map is choosen by normal MapVote (Or all three maps can be done by normal mapvote as well, like in the old JBIII tournament).

Allowed Maps
Maybe it's wise to exclude some maps from the mapvote. This can be due to different reasons (too small/spammy, vehicles, uneven bases, too new/complex, too easy to defend, laggy). If you say all maps are allowed, it's OK by me too.
