Unreal 2 doesn't come out until Q1 of 2002. Epic isn't going to release a game of their own that soon to stomp on the sales of Unreal2.

But the description of the multiplayer portion of U2 sounds pretty good. Kinda like UT meets Tribes meets TFC. Should be fun.

Multiplayer comes in the form of deathmatch, team deathmatch, last man standing, capture the flag, and a new expanded multiplayer game that mixes action and strategy…

In the new expanded multiplayer game, player teams will fight for control of planet surfaces and alien artifacts using nanotechnology replicators to build ever more sophisticated weapons such as automated gun turrets, force fields, sensors, recon and repair robots, and more.

Players will choose one of three player classes at the beginning of play – class selection establishes a balance of speed, special abilities, armor, and firepower. All races, abilities, weapons, equipment, and tactics will have precedents in the single-player game – but the expanded multiplayer experience is said to bring everything together at the same time.

Yeah, that's true, T-T-L. Unreal 2 is going to be so much more (multiplayer-wise) than Unreal was. It should add plenty of new-ness in weapons, maps, strategies, and gametypes to hold you over until the official sequel to UT.

And don't forget that the new UnrealEd will be released then! That will be huge because many top mappers will want to try out all the new buttons. We'll have deformable landscapes, so we'll probably see lots of big outdoor maps.

the Unreal 2 engine will have HUGE possibilities, EPic will break there own record of BEST GAME EVER . The fact that you can edit almost everything in Unreal and UT is the awesome thing about it, what will Unreal 2 bring ? Only better.

anyway, back on topic
I'm pretty sure that Unreal ][ will be facing doom 3, and frankly i have no idea who will win, unreal 2 engine has a lot of potential, but there are some details we don't know yet, like the amount of players on a server, and how the dynamic lightening has changed.
The doom 3 engine has real time lightening or something, and high poly models, the only advantage doom3 has is the lightening imo, but then again, it requires a very high end machine.
I would say that they'r both at 50%, no winners as of yet.
