as long as your board will take it there should be no problem.
you may need to get rambus ram if you don't already have any.
what board do you have at the moment?

what to take into consideration:
-max frequency of the board
-max multiplier of the board
-socket type
-amount of ram it can hold and type

god im so new to all of this... i dont even know what kind of mobo i have. ill look tomorrow. where would i find all of this information that you said i should know?

the manaul should tell you most of it.
look in device properties for the CPU type, it would say P3, Duron, Athlon or something other. otherwise your need to open the machine up and look for the model number/chipset number. then look for it on the manufacturers website.

ok we solved the problem. it was decided that for ~$800, we could just get a whole new mobo and the processor.
