Unreal editor freezes when building level:

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Hello folks,

We are encountering an error with Unreal's Editor when we try to build a simple level. Everything in the Editor seems to work fine (subtraction brushes, lights, etc) but if the map gets to be a certain size and complexity (several 1024X1024 rooms with hallways and lights) Unreal Editor freezes and fails to complete the build. If the room is small enough, the Editor has no problem.

We have several computer labs running Unreal 3, but only one classroom seems to have this problem. It's somewhat alarming because the problem machines are new this year and are quite powerful in specs:

HP xw6600 Workstation

Windows XP 32 bit
2X Intel Xeon E5450's @ 3.00GHz (8 cores)
8 Gigs DDR2 667 Registered DIMM's (4X 2gig sticks) (will be 64X eventually)
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700 512 MB video memory

Any idea what's going on?

Update:

We thought that it might be a hardware issue, so we tried removing 6 gigs of RAM and swapping out the Quardo 1700 FX with a Quadro 1500 FX, but we're still having the same problem.

Any ideas?

Hello Hunter, thanks for the reply. I just checked our memory timings and they're set for default (DDR2 667 @ 333MHz). Also, we already tested the 8-gig problem by removing 6 gigs of ram, but the problem is still occurring.

Could it be a driver issue relating to the use of the Quadro FX cards?

It used to be the case that the Quadro drivers were slower but more correct (fewer "optimisations") that the equivalent GeForce drivers.

I note also that the WHQL drivers for the Quadro are slightly different from the stock GeForce 8/9/200 drivers (178.26 vs 178.24 at the time of writing)?

The only way to test would be to get a "gaming" video card and try it in one of these systems.
