My wife was making fun of Akin with her sister today because he was on the news. The lady next to her told them to watch what they say because some people are pro-life. We live in Missouri.

So in other words, this retard will be elected because he represents retards.

You guys don't understand. This guy really does have a chance of winning. A stupid as that sounds, it's completely true. I just argued with a friend, he'd rather have this guy instead of McCaskill because Akin is Republican and my friend doesn't want to lose anymore money. By losing more money, he means he's at his limits as far as tax shelters go, just like everyone else complaining about socialism. Nevermind how idiotic Akin is. The uneducated still want embryos to go to heaven and the upper middle class want their big tax returns.

This shouldn't be that surprising. We live in a country where restaurant owners can make a bigoted comment about homosexuals and have a record sales event.

this is irrelevant to everything else you just said.

yes.
we do live in a country where bigoted comments about homosexuals can draw record crowds. and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

don't confuse free-speech with equality.
Mr. Chick-Fil-A can say whatever he wants about gay people. but he still has to hire them and serve them when they come into his establishment looking for work or a cock sandwich. his personal views don't represent the corporation. they have to abide by Federal employment and business standards just like every other company.

Undecent people shouldn't live in the USA ? There's always that option of sending any megalomaniacs to islands as was done with Napoleon.

OMGz I sure am glad u were there to xplane free-speech and equality. Plz show me how 2 wipe my ass.

My point was that the country is full of self-serving assholes. I don't give a shit about their free speech if they don't give a shit about how their actions affect others. The "Fuck you, I'm right!" mentality doesn't deserve free-speech. It deserves a muzzle.

no it doesn't.

people weren't allowed to say "fuck you, I'm right" in France from about 1750 to 1799... and the streets ran red with blood.
people weren't allowed to say "fuck you, I'm right" in Germany from about 1929 to 1946... and 6 million Jews died.
people weren't allowed to say "fuck you, I'm right" in Iraq from about 1980 to 2003... and 200,000 Kurds died.

shall I continue?

Limiting speech even stupid or hateful speech is a terrible idea. It takes the rest of the society to point and laugh and shame people out of it instead of punishing people for their ignorance/stupidity.

Hitler said, "Fuck you, I'm right," rather loudly. Do you really think any of those events you listed didn't have vocal opposition? The idea of "free speech" is just something written down on a piece of paper. In reality all public speech is never completely free from manipulation. Sometimes it is manipulated more, sometimes less. We have an entire industry built on manipulating speech.

I'm not against people speaking their minds if they actually know what they're talking about. I'm not even against people being stupid and having uneducated opinions who like to talk about them. I'm against people with no clue and the possible ability of controlling my personal life having the opportunity to speak to and rally the rather large group of close-minded people in this country. I don't give a shit about morals or traditions, if you don't want to eat meat on Fridays I don't care, but if you're going to actually damage my life in some way then you need to shut up. Claiming women can't get pregnant from rape damages my life because I might have a daughter soon, so he needs to shut up and be banned from public speaking before we have another retard rally aiming at protesting or bombing more abortion clinics.

Furthermore, the more I think about it, I never said I was against free speech. Free speech, what little we actually have, allows the people like this Akin guy to make their idiotic notions be known. I'm only against him having the ability to continue making stupid statements and gaining acceptance from morons after the fact.

if that's the case, then you're just being unreasonable.

the price for liberty is eternal vigilance.
not everyone is going to be completely responsible. you just have to deal with it. either you want a Nanny state, or you want the freedom for some people to be stupid.

there's not a lot of room for middle ground.

So...free speech is okay, as long what's being said agrees with your opinions and ideologies?

while I basically agree with you, don't you fear that giving these morons a platform might give people the idea that their intolerant behavior and stupidity might be legitimate and that at some point the stupid will outnumber the reasonable and that the next step is a less free society?

short answer?
no.

slightly longer answer?
the world always balances itself out. I mean think about it; there have always been stupid people. and there are always more stupid people than there are non-stupid people. at some point - far enough back in time - all people were pretty stupid.

yet we still made it this far.
and the world is only becoming a better place. it happens slowly, but you can't really stop this progress.

we overthrew the monarchies.
we outlawed slavery.
gays are getting married.

it all marches forward.
