most pop "artist" dont write their lyrics or music they have someone else do it for them, all they do is sing and look pretty

...and that makes the music worse why?

I couldn't care less who writes the songs, I mean I'd rather have a catchy tune written by a professional songwriter than lots of 'alternative' crap written by the musicians themselves. If you can't do it, leave it to someone else.

What I mean by real music, I guess, is probably most anything that takes at least a marginal amount of skill or inspiration to create.

Bah. I don't really care who wrote the music, as long as it's good. It's true that almost all of the best bands do write their own music, it's just that not doing so doesn't in and of itself make the music bad.

And I get some good stations too, and when my MP3 isnt handy, I'll listen to them. I meant what would you say music needs for an improvement on the whole.

On the whole? Well, that's easy, people should be more willing to explore different types of music. And I don't mean just listening to some 'alternative' rock band (where 'alternative' means 'not in the top 40 and therefore cool, not different'), I mean trying out completely different types of music.

you americans have obviously not heard of "The Cheeky Girls". these "pop-stars/pop-idol" rejects (as they didnt even make it past the prelims!) are one of the UK top acts at the moment!

sporting such wonderful songs as "touch my bum" "we are the cheeky girls" and " take your shooosies off" they make the uk chart a load of sh1t!

in the UK we have real problems!

and thats before i start on the "fast food rockers" (who got to number 2)

THANK GOD FOR THE LEEDS/READING FESTIVALS!

I thought this thread was going to be about cordial drinks. :/

Like Sam said, pop music stands for popular music. Britney might be at the top of the charts, and you guys may hate it, but it's there because more people are buying her music than the latest nine inch nails single. Simple as that.

Some day the video games industry will have games that appeal to certain groups that everyone hates, we'll have the britney spears of playstation games that is always at the top while theres a select few making a noise about how she's talentless and doesn't deserve it.

It's old, get over it.

You know Sam, only you and pReTTy_vAcaNt actually answered the question 'What would you do to make pop music better?" Yeah, thats just your opinion, and thats all I was looking for, not an arguement, although they take root in every goddamn thread these days.

Blah. I'm getting sick of people complaining about pop music. I admit there's lots of very annoying stuff out there, but then again, there's also pop music like Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton or Norah Jones. Whether you like their music or not, you have to admit that they're different from the typical over-produced pop stuff like Britney Spears or your average boy band.

Norah Jones yes...but not the other two. I can't tell them apart.

"Ooh, I'm a non-blonde woman who plays her own instrument and breaks the pop barrier! I'm real! Love me MTV! Yeah!"

Bull****...throw Avril Lavigne in there too.

And also, pop music can't be fixed IMO. I think it is too late. Unfortunately, stupid teens (not teh smart ones) control the market. They blow their money on the garbage, so they get catered to. Solution...kill everyone. Pop music will be infinitely better...granted, there won't be any music...or people...but...eh.

Actually, only sam did. You don't improve something thats already popular by alienating the current audience and introducing some niche underground music (like say an acid jazz music triangle non-vocal band).

So to answer your question, you don't make pop music better.

So we have to change the people to improve pop music!
;)

seriously, pop is quickly made music that reflects the NOW and nothign else. most pop music sounds awful after 5 years.

Question: why do so many people want 'pop music' to be better anyway? Teens don't control the market, you can buy music no matter what your tastes are, at (generally) the same or lower price as the mainstream stuff for that matter. All teens control, all pop music is, is what goes on the main distribution channels, and why is that so important?

We already have that. It's called 'The Sims'. :)

It's actually a virtually perfect analogy, if I do say so myself. Like pop music, The Sims is great on the first few plays through... like pop music, it's almost entirely forgettable after that... and like The Sims, it spawns an endless series of follow-ups that do exactly the same thing.

rant and rave as much as you like, at the end of the day, it's about what people choose... and every person is different. a lot of people seem to slam down their opinions, and jump down the throats of those that dare believe different. we all have our own opinions, please let's remember that and respect it?

Well, originally this was intended to be a poll discussing ways to improve fecies, but due to a misspelling in the thread title, I got a better idea :)

No, we are still disgussing feces. :B

If it's catchy and simple, it'll sell. If it's harder to listen to and requires more mental investment, then it won't be accepted by the majority. The easy listening stuff includes many genres that get lumped into "pop", therefore "pop" can be anything, whether you like it or not. If you favorite undergroundish industrial band was suddenly played on the radio every 5 minutes, it would be pop.
