You are right but we are insinuating that "><" are wings. Being as it may, they could be clapped together for whatever reason. I will draw a picture if need be.

Additionally, one could infer that the symbolism derived from the pictogram you displayed in the form of (><) could also described as the outward edges which trace in an arc-like manner being the outward bulge of huddled wings on a cold night, whereas the cross depicted in the center would merely be markings, or ruffles if you will, in the plumage of said Owl.
