Let's not be too quick to congratulate ourselves on our fine behavior. I realize that there are a lot of us out there and we can't control what people do....but there should be an amount of pressure to be reasonable, non-llama, non-whining players.

I bring this up because the complaints are on the rise and from very good sources. GO with me on this.

I don't know if I should be replying to this or not because I don't wear the tag, at least not when in an actual game. Much like Nightmare I choose not to because I suck and well, PuF'ers in general don't. In fact most of you rock. But anyway to the point. Like everyone else has said, it's bound to happen. With so many members there are bound to be some turds that are out to ruin PuF's name.

However, there is no 1 solution to this problem (besides a grueling intiation process.....Twizzler 500 maybe? ;) *L*), and quite frankly I don't think there's much, or anything for that matter that we can do but uphold our half of the bargain while wearing the PuF tag. :)

Hey, thanks hal!

/me gives hal a big manly hug.

I actually stopped wearing the |PuF tag when I got my ]LoL[ tag. I'm just not big enough to handle two tags. I feel like a little kid wearing a pro football player's shoulder pads when I play as ]LoL[Boom|PuF. But I still have to behave anyway on the pubs. People sometimes say to me "Hey, ]LoL[Boom, are you the Boom from PuF?" So tag or no tag, I feel like I gotta represent.

But hal makes a good point, what sometimes is worse than the llama behavior is the whining at the llama behavior. I was on an all face server last night (every server with good pings winds up being an all face server :() and there was all the classic face llamaness going on all around me. I could have complained about the spawnsniping and pistol pooping and the fact that backup was nonexistant, and I would have been right. But it would have sounded whiney. If I want backup, I can always drag a PuFfer into a game with me. So I didn't say a word except "gg". Of course, I did take the occasional break from going on flag runs to see how many campers I could telefrag :D. But I didn't mouth off about it. ;)

After one of the games, one of the spawnsnipers typed, "Oh Yeah, I got a Rampage! Owned!" And I actually typed in, "Spawnsniping rampages don't count." But before I hit enter, I just took a deep breath, deleted it, and just typed "gg". Why should I give the impression that I am a high and mighty PuFfer with llama police powers. If someone on my team is spawnsniping other PuFers, I may ask him to stop and go on a run with me instead, but I try not to talk down to people.

Lately I have been having tons of fun on Swine. I was on there yesterday and had three EE guys on my team. Someone from the other team said something like "Oh no! Three EE guys on one team!" Just then ]LoL[Jammer joined the server and was thrown on my team. I couldn't help typing, "Now you are really in trouble! Forget about the EEs, you are going up against two ]LoL[s on the same team!" I never saw so many "ROTFL" at once. :D And in another game, one of those l337 guys (not one of the EE guys) said something like "Why won't my team back me up at all", which is really an insult, since I am trying my best; and I responded by saying, "Sorry, I'm too busy sucking to help you out. :)." He was much nicer after that. :)

Damn, this game is fun :D

Thanks for the welcome back, Morety! Yeah, the vacation was good. So good, in fact, that I am now engaged!! [CMi]El_Phantasmo, my clanmate (posts here as Foxpaw) also got engaged last week. As I've been pointing out, we did *not* get engaged to each other, though :) E_P and I are busy getting tips from Blatanizer and Faust as to how to not get divorced :)

There now that we are aquainted. :D

I don't know about this "I don't wear the PuF tag cause I suck" business. My online name is [SuK]I_B_Bangin'|PuF. And I really do suck. (Not that way Boom, just in case you were getting excited :D ) But I would like to think that when I play online I show some type of example of good sportsmanship. Don't get me wrong evryone has a crappy day and venting can be almost impossible to hold back, but I usually try to hold it for IRC where I can vent and then get back to joking around with everyone else in there. Bottom line, if you suck, so what. The more important issue should be how you conduct yourself.

Hal, I GO with you on this.

You're not the first to bring this up.

BUT...to Devil's Advocate this... suppose Dragonash mouths off on a pub some night (gee, imagine that). Is he then not allowed to wear the PuF tag? (by the way, I'm just saying DA because he's the loudest PuFfer and because WAnk mentioned it in joking). To just play Devil's Advocate here... DA does a LOT for PuF. His personality is ..him. You going to tell someone they can't have a personality ?(that's not what I'm saying you're doing. I totally agree with what you're bringing up)

I guess my question is tho...so what's your solution?

Is this thread going to degenerate into finger pointing? Into "I saw so and so looking at me funny on the Roost last night, BAN THEM FROM PuF"?

I dunno..I guess this is one of the main reasons I don't wear the tag ever anymore. When you and your team get told they are "making the name PuF look bad" by starting a game on time.... well it just makes PUF look like...well.. a clan.

I take the name PuF to mean : good sport, skilled (or trying and learning) , good teamwork, doesn't cheat, has fun.

If it is also to mean "never to lose your temper, never say a harsh word, never defend yourself, never step up when someone wants to throw down" well then, that's a lot to carry. And if people don't think they can live up to that, then perhaps they shouldn't wear it. Which is what I chose :)

So I guess in a way, I'm saying exactly what Hal is, but from the other direction. Or something ;)

No Soup For You

I got your PM right HERE!
I got your back Hal! I'm with you. I take the PuF tag very seriously and didn't add it for quite a while. Now I always wear it in DM. I don't like to wear it in CTF because even though I know it's not a skill thing, the well-known PuFers are pretty good at CTF and I'm not.

I don't chat much when I play - very rarely say anything more than "gg" - but I certainly don't do anything that I think would discredit PuF.

At work I have the UT demo on a machine and sometimes I blow off steam by playing a little bit online (I swear! - only once in a while). I don't wear the PuF tag for this because I think it is unPuF-like to spank newbies on the Demo servers (there are some good players, just not as many as are on the good retail game servers).

Anyway, if you have specific reliable information about somebody being an ass, why don't you try to privately tell them to knock it off or lose the PuF tag.

Sorry Hal, but I must agree with Troll!! We do try and keep a somewhat standard, but we are all human!!

For the most part the majority of PuF'ers stick together and try and have fun, wellbalanced games. But everyone is human, as Troll indicated. Everyone has a bad day or a couple of them, or have something bad going on with their life and they bring it to the online world.

I know I have come online to play and went off in a B1tch1ng frenzy! I then came to my senses and left and just shut my computer down and relaxed and read a book or go watch a movie!!

But when we get someone who lives by the rule of whinning, cheating, poor sportsmanship, etc. And plays that way all the time..then that is where we draw the line!! But to hold PuF to a standard might be a bit extreme. Maybe you meant as a guideline!! ;)

just my 4 bucks!!

Sorry I haven't posted on this earlier, but I got a lot of stuff going on at school lately.. anyways, I totally agree with you Hal, and I believe that i'm fairly consistant in maintaining that level of conduct. I don't play well at all, but I think what matters is the attitude.. that's what reflects on PuF the most. That's why, despite Nightmare's skill issue, I wear it..

cryco, edit your post, it's streching out this whole page...

I agree with you, hal

I'm a soooky player but I play "right" as "right" has been defined by PuF'ers. Therefore, I enter a puclic server, I may lose horribly, but I won't make US look bad

Well, I guess it depends what The Problem actually is.

If someone really is making us look bad, anyone who is concerned about it should approach them privately and try to discuss the problem. PuF needs to be able to "defend" itself, where possible, against people who would make us look bad. If OTOH, someone is just getting ****ty over something unimportant and having a whinge at our expense, PuF needs to "defend" its members against unfair defamation.

Just MHO :)

I was one of those sources for Hal.

I have my sources.

PuF is not a clan.

PuF DOES represent a community dedicated to fair play, good sportsmanship and teamwork.

PuF does not mean we have to lay down and take it like a sheep.

PuF generally indicates:
No whining about lag (feel free to state something about it if the admin is there and apologize that you can't play then because of it, and politely excuse yourself)
No whining about an opponents choice of weapons (flak, sniper, rockets, shock).
Do your best to humiliate llamas (on Face, I stop playing for the most part and do my best to make the llama's life hell - usually by calling him a "spawn sniping no skill bitch" - every time I kill him. Which usually goes on for about 5 or 6 minutes, being said about 10 times).

If you can't handle those guidelines (okay, the humiliate llamas is for those that feel like policing a server) - then don't wear the tag.

Otherwise, feel free.

Troll, you too. Everyone knows you're associated here. You might as well wear it. Just know when to pick your fights (same goes for DA).

I think JEM's on the right track when he says discussing it in pvt with the perps as opposed to posting it here. If it's a reg, then it shouldn't be a problem getting a hold of them, if it's some obsucre guy/gal who posted once and thought it'd be cool to put a |PuF well there's not much to be done.
Roo excusing yourself from a public server is kinda excessive ain't it?:)

It's really too late.

I began frequenting Planetunreal (not the forums) a long time ago. I did this to get timely information. And my gratitude then and now is to QAPete first and last. I suppose I started visiting the forum to find answers to problems not to socialise.

It was made clear from the beginning of my experience that PuF meant only Planet Unreal Forums. While it was and is true that people from PuF try to behave, it really isnt clear to me what that really means specifically. I can say that I have come to understand that individuals will ordain themselves as PuF based upon their own personal values and nothing more. What could be more convenient than having the personal ability to define what is good and declaring that you meet the standard, your standard. Many of these same people, based upon my own observation, behave in ways that I find offensive. They however do not. Standard met.

If you plan on identifying independant standards at this late date, be prepared to subject all the many thousands of current PuF members to detailed review, after the fact. This isnt going to work. It is too late for that.

If you must persue this, then start over from scratch. Be creative and create a new "tier". Maybe Planet Unreal Forum Elite PuFE. Define the standards for membership anyway you like. Draft bylaws. Elect officers and start accepting applications for membership. But leave the rules of membership that were in place at the time most people joined alone. To do otherwise would be unfair.

I have met many people that I genuinely admire at PuF. And some that I avoid. Not surpisingly to me, very few of the people that I admire are currently forum "upper tier". I would like to see the interests of this "majority" of non upper-tier members respected and not harmed by a late inning change in the membership rules.

Thanks

Jim

My thoughts...

Personally I'm proud to wear the PuF tag. I was one of those players who did get irritated by lag and did tend to mention it. For a while. Then something reconnected in my brain and I realized I was being an A$$ since I was wearing the tag. I'm also an avid D&D fan and equate wearing the tag to playing a Paladin. You just can't go around acting moronic or rude, etc. And now I don't. If something upsets me I leave. I don't know what we can all do to stave off the threats to the general PuF reputation but perhaps the time will come when we simply decide okay.. we're changing to a new tag. That way we'll all simply be a new and generally unknown force and can in a manner of speaking reinvent ourselves in the public eye. At least it would for those who may not have a completely original name a chance at making someone think they may not be the same player. Now this doesn't mean any of us are guilty of any wrongdoing which requires hiding behind a new name I'm thinking more along the lines of simply coming out with a new and improved model. :D

OK... I realize the way I said what I did makes it sound like I don't wear the tag cause I suck. I guess I should give a bit more info!?! :)

I choose not to wear it not cause of my skill but cause of my attitude after getting whomped over and over and over again... now I can take a loss (haven't got a win yet! :D) with the best of em, and I say gg and all that. But if after getting trounced, I should so happen to say something that may make someone look bad, I would rather make myself look bad then 10000 innocent, decent, kind people look bad. I hope you can all see where I'm coming from on this.

Can we leave my non-use of the tag in a game alone please!? :D

Actually, no... talk about me, it makes me feel better... hehehe ;)

Roo, yah....pretty much everyone knows I'm PuF...

I think what I was getting at is...If I'm on a pub, with people who don't know PuF, and I lose my cool..well that's gonna make them say, the next time they see one "oh is PuF a clan? Troll's a bitch!" :p I just don't wanna make PuF look bad. And I'm being honest..I'm a firecracker when I lose my temper :) So at least I'm honest about it tho.... what I was getting at is people who think the tag absolves them of whatever their behaviour is. And don't admit they've got a sh!tty attitude. Or something.

I proudly sport it in interforum matches, damn straight.

But I can't promise I'm not gonna call someone a llama spawn sniping loser (which I do when I see one). And if that's gonna make people think less of PuF, I figure it's best not to wear it :)

And DA and I are getting better at picking our fights now. We just alias ;)
