Computer Trouble

I've been having trouble with my computer freezing up on me randomly and since its been a while, I figured it was about time for a reformat. After the format and install, the computer auto restarted and began going through the "checkdisk" stage. The first stage completed just fine, but now its been frozen at 7 percent in the second stage for quite some time now.

Suggestions? Should I restart the computer? What could be the issue?

If checkdisk slows down considerably it might be a damaged HDD. IIRC checkdisk took ages when I ran it on a particularly heavily damaged HDD on an old system of mine. Does it put out any errors/warnings?

No errors or warnings. Even after reformatting and reinstalling, the CheckDisk takes forever. I'm guessing definitely damaged HD. I'll try installing a new one.
