BU Reviews: Killing Floor

If you're a fan of blazing guns and mutant blood and guts, Tripwire's UT2004 mod-turned-retail offering, Killing Floor, just might be your cup of tea. Six player co-op horror and action... yum!

Find out in BeyondUnreal's two-man review of Killing Floor.

The game does look quite good to be a product of UE2.5, not to shabby for an old engine

Thanks hal, Brizz
Heavy Metal should add a little more content to play around with soon.

Which is the bigger bang for the buck: left4dead or this? Are they too different to compare?

As usual.

L4D worth about the same amount of money as KF... ...but you pay about 35 bucks more for L4D for the opening cinematic and one (in words: one) dynamic light, IMHO.

I prefer oranges to apples unless they're pineapples. I can eat those until my mouth bleeds.

You know what? I think it's a matter of taste.

Left 4 Dead is obviously a more polished product that positively punishes any lack of teamwork. Valve poured tons of resources into it. No surprise there. It's also a much faster paced game with considerably weaker enemies.

Killing Floor has considerably more depth, the monsters are much much tougher, and there's not quite as much content as L4D. You can get away with less teamwork in KF due to design choices on the part of the developers, though working together as a team is almost more rewarding.

The honest answer is that I've put hundreds of hours into L4D and I really enjoy it. Lately, I've been hooked on Killing Floor and leveling my characters. I like the gore and scare factor in KF too. They're both great games with lots of support and they are priced in accordance to the content they ship with.

Indeed its a matter of taste, but overall i generally appreicate Killing Floor more because i've seen it evolve from a mod created for a smallish community by a small team of people to being released and played on the grand scale it is seen today.

L4D never had this struggle nor needed the same amount of motivation to continue to develop it for years for free for a handful of players..

Nice review

Hm, sounds like I'll have to look into this after all. I've only given it one try so far, where I attempted to be careful and get into the game solo; only to be punished for attempting to get an overview over available weapons, where my money was, how much of it I had and how much what cost by an apparently very unforgiving timer. I couldn't buy ammo because I didn't find the button before the shop window closed, and died shortly after armed with ... do you get a knife? I certainly couldn't shoot anymore, and some kind of invisible howler killed me without me seeing it.

Really, when you say that "early on it was difficult to get into the game", you're shamelessly understating. It is freaking difficult to know what the **** you're supposed to do. So difficult in fact, that I went back to L4D and TF2 and UT3 and Mirror's Edge and what other, way, way more accessible FPS I play.

But as I said, your positive review makes me want to give it another try. I'm reinstalling it as I write this.

sounds like my first time playing it. The game is actually quite difficult in solo mode for new players.

Hop online (make sure it's set to Normal difficulty), pick Support Specialist, and grab a shotgun as soon as possible. That's an easy class to learn the ropes as the shotguns are so freaking powerful.

One hint: During the rounds you'll see an arrow pointing towards the next trader spawn. Be sure to make your way there as soon as possible (you run fastest while holding the knife) so that you have plenty of time to check out what she has to sell. Stick with your team mates though, of course.

hal can tell you that when I first started playing Killing Floor I kind of hated it because it seemed like I couldn't get anywhere in it and it was hard to even know what to do.

Support Specialist with a shotgun is a good class to start with, as well as Sharpshooter with the Handcannon. I'd recommend not messing with the Crossbow or Hunting Shotgun until you figure out more of the game mechanics, as they are more difficult to play with despite being more powerful.

Beginner is very easy but don't be afraid to try it to learn the basics of the gameplay and the map layouts. First wave on solo only puts you up against 12 or so enemies and you get 1:30 (opposed to 1min) in between waves to fool around. It's also very satisfying if you just want to turn everything into pulp.

Good tip. I don't think I even tried beginner - I just started out at normal and found that challenging, initially.
