It seems that about 30% of the global population are infected with mind controling parasites... How ****ing star trek is this?

Toxoplasma gondii is a common parasite found in the guts of cats; it sheds eggs that are picked up by rats and other animals that are eaten by cats. Toxoplasma forms cysts in the bodies of the intermediate rat hosts, including in the brain.

Oxford scientists discovered that the minds of the infected rats have been subtly altered. In a series of experiments, they demonstrated that healthy rats will prudently avoid areas that have been doused with cat urine. In fact, when scientists test anti-anxiety drugs on rats, they use a whiff of cat urine to induce neurochemical panic.

However, it turns out that Toxoplasma-ridden rats show no such reaction. In fact, some of the infected rats actually seek out the cat urine-marked areas again and again. The parasite alters the mind (and thus the behavior) of the rat for its own benefit.

If the parasite can alter rat behavior, does it have any effect on humans?

Dr. E. Fuller Torrey (Associate Director for Laboratory Research at the Stanley Medical Research Institute) noticed links between Toxoplasma and schizophrenia in human beings, approximately three billion of whom are infected with T. gondii:

* Toxoplasma infection is associated with damage to astrocytes, glial cells which surround and support neurons. Schizophrenia is also associated with damage to astrocytes.
* Pregnant women with high levels of antibodies to Toxoplasma are more likely to give birth to children who will develop schizophrenia.
* Human cells raised in petri dishes, and infected with Toxoplasma, will respond to drugs like haloperidol; the growth of the parasite stops. Haloperidol is an antipsychotic, used to treat schizophrenia.

Dr. Torrey got together with the Oxford scientists, to see if anything could be done about those parasite-controlled rats that were driven to hang around cat urine-soaked corners (waiting for cats). According to a recent press release, haloperidol restores the rat's healthy fear of cat urine. In fact, antipsychotic drugs were as effective as pyrimethamine, a drug that specifically eliminates Toxoplasma.

I for one find this inherently cool, and at the same time, extremely creepy.
How much of the insanity of human behaviour can now be blamed on toxoplasma? Will it be like ADHD where you have school kids knocking peoples teeth in and then saying 'dont blame me, ive got adhd'?

Discuss or eat cake.

This explains a few things. Humans aren't completely insane, just being warped that way by a parasitefrom the 23rd century. Perhaps when we get ridof thesethings people will stop being such dumbasses. Doubtful though.

Maybe those 30% are the more intelligent people and removing the parasites will make them dumb too

IANAS, but is this saying that cats produce a mind-controlling parasite that draws their prey into their territory?

There are a lot of awesome things about cats, and yet that is the most awesome thing I've heard yet.

This reminds me of the crap movie "The Puppet Masters" from like 1994 I think. About the stingray looking aliens that took over people.

The original book by Heinlein is much better than that crappy movie. If you want to know all about the parasites in your brain, jsut read it.

RATS. The article is talking about rats, not mice. You're obviously one of those parasites trying to disrupt our scientific endeavors!

Very intresting you should bring up PETA. As I was watching a program about that just last night. Since then, I have lost all respect for good PETA members, because they are misled, and really don't know what PETA is about.

Oh yeah, it was on that BullSh!t show with Pen & Teller. It's amazing how many animals PETA actually kill themselves and say "it's better that we do it our way". They are even linked to terrorists (giving money to them) If you think you're a PETA freak, check the video out.

I love that show.

Dr. Torrey was in an article in the December Esquire, and you can read it for only $2.95! "Finally, an Explanation for the Crazy Cat Lady in 5B" Couldn't find it free anywhere. Anyway, I don't remember it talking about rats, but it does mention his research. He looked back a very long way for reported cases of insanity, and says the rate was pretty low back when we kept cats out of our homes because they were considered "evil". There was a sharp increase in insanity rates after cats became fashionable as indoor pets. A large percentage of schitzophrenics do have T. gondii in their systems, but not all. It's an interesting, and kinda scary (considering I have 2 cats and an 11month old girl), theory.

I've had cats all my life. I'm sure I have large amounts of these parasites. I hope I don't go insane. I don't think I'm schizophrenic, but you never know.
