OK, I know these kind of polls crop up every so often, so I think this one was due a re-run.

OK, I know the list of options isn't exhaustive in the slightest. It'd take a full page to list all the series, so I listed the main ones. Hence the "Other" option.

For me, it has to be Babylon5. A convincing 5 year arc story, with massive character development, real-world issues get covered in a realistic way and it generally has a depth that most sci-fi series lack. It also covers things that most series won't touch.

No Battlestar Galactica in that poll :p

After that would be DS9, Firefly, Space: Above and Beyond and Babylon 5 in no particular order.
I also like the Stargates but they are more popcorn SciFi than anything

So did Star Trek (or at least the better episodes in the any of the series) ...

Babylon 5 only had 1 problem : it got treated like a 3rd-rate series by the tv-channels that broadcast it over here and I think they never ever showed the 2nd season or later.

As for favourite series ? I think they're all great in their own way.

btw :
you've forgot Firefly (or whatever that 'western in space' was called), Dr. Who, Sliders and Red Dwarf

B5 for me I think. I mean I love Farscape alot and I think it's an amazing show, but B5 was more rewarding because of the stories intertwined over such a long period of time. I watched some of it again recently and although the CGI is dated and some of the actors are literally made of ham, it's still the best.

The main actors were usually very good (especially molari, g'kar, marcus and delen, followed by vir, ivonova and lenir) and the story lines were a brilliant shade of epic (a season climax REALLY WAS a season climax) the ship designs were excellent and personally I think the Vorlons are the coolest alien race ever seen in anything (sorry 8472 :p) the fact that you rarely saw Kosh made it all the better when you did (which is why my favourite episode is interludes and examinations...never has a sigle word - 'incorrect' in this case - been so brilliant).

Farscape still rules over pretty much everything else though. I'll always have a soft spot for voyager too...I always saw it as kind of a gentler kind of show (plus it used to be on on sundays here which was a sleepy sort of highliht of the week).

I voted Other, because I can't really decide. Babylon 5 is awesome on many levels. Red Dwarf is awesome in a very special way. Greatest title song EVER.
And where is Firefly? Firefly is great.

Enterprise is a joke, I'd vote it down if I could. You like Enterprise? That qualifies as mental disorder.

I liked B5 for the story, but JMS can't write dialogue. He does excellent speeches, but a lot of the dialogue sounds very stilted. Especially in the latter seasons.
Londo and G'Kar are the only two characters with consistently good writing and acting. The others are very hit and miss. But then the whole show is basically centered around them.
The story buildup is good, the character twists less so. On repeat viewing it's too controled and artificial. You see excactly where JMS moved characters into position to serve the storyarcs.
People praise the planning of the show, and that led to some good things, but in areas like this it also makes it less natural

But no need to get into a huge discussion about this. To each his own. It's still a good show, but also somewhat overrated IMHO :)

A hopeless romantic when it comes to Bab5...

True, but there's only so many options for a poll, so I had to make a few sacrifices. I didn't stick Red Dwarf in there mainly because I was thinking mainly of non-comedy shows (but it would rate very highly if I included all sci-fi shows).

I just got Series 3 on DVD, and that episode is an absolute killer. I love the fact that you actually get some serious emotion from Kosh at last. It's even more potent when you discover the real reason for his reactions later in the episode.

I think the acting in B5 is pretty strong throughout really, true, there are some less than perfect moments, but it's also backed up with some amazing scenes. I think the scenes between Sheridan and Delenn are superb, and it really rings home the feeling of their relationship as it slowly becomes more and more powerful over time.

I always had a soft spot for DS9 so I voted for that. But I wholeheartedly believe that Battlestar Galactica is on par with it and will become my favorite series overall. Honorable mention must go to Firefly, Stargate SG-1, and Star Trek -- TNG. The Borg storyline is the best thing that happened to TNG. SG-1 continues to balance humor and drama despite Richard Dean Anderson stepping back his involvement. Firefly is just another piece of great writing coupled excellent characters and a great vision of the future.

I really like the Galactica, and I'm an avid SG1 fan, but my favorite series is Twilight Zone. The original Rod Serling programs, not the newer crappy ones.
