Well I've been struggling with this new mouse and a sensitivity that feels "right". Had the same problem with my previous mouse as well, just could never find a suitable sensitivity that gave me a happy medium between aim and movement. I've lately found myself getting stuck in corners, totally losing track of players going past me quickly, missing moving z-axis shots by a mile, and other general crappiness in my gameplay.

Well tonight I think I finally figured out my problem.

For as long as I've been playing FPS games with a mouse... I've been using acceleration and I guess never gave it a second thought. I honestly never knew exactly what it was until I started playing 2k4. It wasn't til' I read a bunch of "improvement" guides that said acceleration is bad that I actually paid it mind, sought out the settings for it, and turned it off thinking I'd get used to it and it would make me a better player.

Well PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT to that!

I guess I had gotten so used to it for as long as I've played when it's off my mouse just seems slow and laggy and it totally throws me off. After a few games of AS, INV, and DM tonight with a decently low sens and low acceleration ON, I can honestly say I play MUCH better with it on! Sure my hitscan and combos are gonna be a little harder to hit but overall my gameplay has gone up considerably... and it's not like I had "awesome" skills in that department anyways. ;) At least now I can work on improving them with settings that feel comfortable.

So kiddies... the moral of the story is: Stick with what you're comfortable with and don't go changing it just cause some guide tells you to. :D

Roger that. What works for one person won't work for another. The general idea is that if you want better hitscan, the lower your sensitivity. However, perhaps the best "shot" I've ever seen was Rev.Whoopass, and he used to talk about having his sensitivity somewhere near 10.0 (if I remember correctly).

Currently, my sensitivity is at 0.75 with accel off. I'm thinking of lowering it a tad more.

Anyhow, it all depends on your PC setup, your mouse, and what you're comfortable with.

If I had just sticked with what I was comfortable with, I was still using arrow keys, had automatic weapon switching on, only used my mousewheel to switch weapons and never learned to dodge or translocate properly
Oh, and I would never have written an English guide "because I wasn't comfortable with it"...Maybe I wouldn't even started forumming in the first place...

*Ahem* In case it isn't clear, I disagree with you. Being comfortable with your setup is a crucial part of gaming, but if you just keep sticking with what you know and can do, you'll never improve your game.
If a guide tells you something, it should have backup arguments or it's worthless (why is it bad to play with acceleration, btw?). Weigh the pros and cons of the issue and think wether it will be an improvement.

If you think it will be an improvement, then try it out for about a week. If your game hasn't been improved by then (or the same as before), go back to your default setting.

Note: it took me 3 times a week to get comfortable with hidden weapons instead of center, but it was worth it. Now I can barely play with weapon view...it totally blocks the view ;)

(bit OT)
but AMEN to that... i switched to nothing in view about 2 months back... it took me for ever to get used to it... could'nt hit a shock combo to save my life... now I reckon i'm a bit better without it... but it was toughy to get used to.

You're misinterpreting what's meant by "comfortable."

Comfortable in that what works for you, since everyone's systems, style of play, etc is different. Comfortable in that there's no one setting that's right for everyone.

NOT comfortable in that you're affraid to try different things to improve, but comfortable in that you know when you've tweaked enough to find the proverbial "sweet spot."

Try not to be too literal and over analyse posts.

Sorry, Ren, but I don't really see the difference between the two "comfortable with" definitions. And I'm affraid others might draw that same conclusion. Thus I stick with my post.
No harm done, right? :)

I just switched from cycling through weapons to piped weapon binds and I've noticed an improvment in my gameplay (meaning, at least I have a good weapon in my hand when I'm pwned. ;) Change is hard, but in little doses it can be a good thing - in moderation.

Tale has a good point. Just because you're "comfortable" with however you're playing doesn't mean you won't be comfortable with a different setting that you haven't tried yet that will actually improve your game. Back in UT2003 days, I was comfortable with not dodging, but that was only because I didn't know about them. I was comfortable with having my weapons in view, but only because I hadn't tried it any other way. Yes, being comfortable with your setup is a necessity, but you should always explore every option before you decide which you're comfortable with.

In fact, I'd been comfortable for a long time with the setup I had, but having just gotten a MX510, I wanted those side buttons by my thumb to go to use. I set them to pipeswitch my favorite weapons (the most powerful ones, go figure): one for LtG and shock, the other rockets and flak. I've always mousewheeled through my weapons, using 'E' to take out my best at the time first. Inefficient? Yes. Was I comfortable with it? Yes. Are there better options out there? Yes. I've always had weapon switching on pickup. Always. But given that I now have some buttons on my mouse for some of them, I turned it off. Is it hard to get used to? Sure is. I keep running around with my assault rifle out. But I will get comfortable with it in time, and my game will improve because of it. Additionally, I've been playing offline at a game speed of 1.10 to improve my reaction time and "holy sh*t I'm in a tense fight" aim. Lots of changes at once, but I'll get used to them, something I wouldn't have done had I not explored my options.

Anyway, in theory, mouse acceleration is a good thing. You can get low sensitivity when you need it (sniping, hitting shock combos) and quick movements when you need them (spinning around real fast to kill that assh*le shooting you in the back). That's next on my list to try. Currently I have my sensitivity set to 3.5.

The trick is to concieve a really good setup before you ever get used to anything.

I think back to quake, U1, so many years ago, and the only change I've ever had to make to the way I play FPS games is moving from wasd to esdf because of Tribes voice menu, and occasionally adding buttons as per game, but nothing ever drastic.

But yeah, you know me boog, you think I could ever listen to any of those guides about my aim? lol, they mention a mouse pad, and I'm like oh... never mind then.

No acceleration being universally better is the dumbist thing I ever heard. If you get used to your thresh hold, it shouldn't matter if it's on or not, because it doesn't give you any less control of it.

Currently I have my sensitivity set to 3.5.

Again, different people, systems, playing styles, etc.

I have the exact same mouse as you, and I'm at 0.75.

Moral of the story, there's no concrete right setting for everyone.

I see both Ren and Tale's points here. :)

I'm not opposed to changing and I'm not saying "Don't do anything different ever."

My point is don't struggle with something that doesnt feel right for an extended period of time just cuz others say it's right which is basically what I was foolishly doing, just because in almost every guide I saw or forum thread regarding aim and/or mice settings the majority said acceleration=bad. ;)

I played with acceleration on for more than 4 years in UT and Q3... been playing 2k4 for less than 1 year and yes.. been struggling with the mouse sensitivity thing for almost that whole time. If something is going to work for you it shouldn't take that long to get used to. Like the hidden weapons thing... how long did it take you before it became "comfortable?" For me it took a while but that while was like a month or so? I'm talking almost a year and two mice worth of time here.

And /me bows to Aenubis' mad trackball skillz, hehe.

And then theres me who uses the arrows, the scroll wheel, no mousepad, and a two button mouse. Cant play for **** any other way... at least in Unreal series games.

I guess it just depends, one of the best shooters I have known had his x/y mouse speed at 6, and his z mouse speed at .5. Play around a bit. :)

As the saying goes - try it, you just might like it ;)

Personally i don't like mouse accel, but then i'm not used to it! Stick with what you feel most comfy with as Boogy say :)

I must be some genitalactic freak of nature then. I use Mousewheel and arrows - in fact, some call my setup something odd, but it works for me and I usually have my tools at my disposal when I need them. I've learned to pretty much count my mousewheel clicks to know how fast I have to get to a particular weapon.

And yet I still kick ass, even with what most people consider a vastly inferior setup. So yeah, the rule of thumb is use what's good for you, not what's good for most people, or even all people.
