Why play this if there is Battlefield 1942 etc...
Fair question, and one Red Orchestra gets often. The simple answer is this, because Red Orchestra does WWII ground combat better than any other game. When it comes to games, you really either need to do one of two things. One, invent a new genre, create something that has never been seen before. Very few games ever do this. Two, do something in an established genre, but do it FAR better than its ever been done before. Raise the bar for everyone, so to speak. Bring something new and fresh to the genre.
When UT99 came out you could have asked the same question. "Why play this when there is Quake, Quake II, etc deathmatch space futuristic combat?" When UT2k4 came out you could have asked the same question. "Why play this when I can play XMP or Halo?" The answer to both of those questions is, you play them because they raised the bar, brought something new and fresh to an established genre.
This is what Red Orchestra has always aimed to do, and what we hope we have done with our 3.1 release. Additionally, with 3.1 Red Orchestra is the only WWII tank simulation to come out in 5 years. Hop on google and search for one. We did, and the last one we could find was Panzer Commandor for Windows 95
Came out in '97 or '98.
Red Orchestra isn't a game for everyone. Some poeple will be put off by the high learning curve, the level of realism, etc. Others will relish in it. In the end all we can do is make a game that WE would love to play, and hope others enjoy it as well. For us it was simple, we couldn't get WWII gameplay like this anywhere else, so we had to make Red Orchestra
