The real mapping challenge

Don't take this wrong. I'm not a mapper at all. I would love to but I don't have the skills, the teacher or the time but... I challenge Nali City and all of it's resources to take on the following task. Don't stop here either. Spread the word as it will only help you too.

In my several years of playing UT, I have come across a situation worth mentioning since so many of you are so hellbent on making better maps than others and getting the much deserved kudos. I want to try to make this work in my favor so here it goes:

It is my humble opinion that some of the best and unfortunateley usually most of the worst maps out there are Monster Hunt maps. These have more creativity built into them than all of the other gametypes combined. Monster Hunt maps are must be the toughest maps to make being so much foresight and imagination must go into them in order for them to be considered even well made at all.

So my challenge here is to have some of you mappers take the time and give it a shot. I bet many of you have never even played the mod before. Play it and play at least 20 of the maps. Surely you'll come across a couple good ones in twenty. There are only about 150 maps total that I can think of for this game type right now. This is an excellent opportunity for you to OWN the market and make a real name for yourself in mapping. Don't you want people to see that the map was created by you and sigh in relief knowing that it will be fulfilling to play? Aren't there certain map makers you think of when you see a really good CTF map or a DeathMatch map? That person could be you! Take your place in UT history! No one has really tried this (making MH maps) in years. This market is ripe for the taking! Do it!!! Install the Monster Hunt mod. Monster Hunt is extremely fun especially with 2 or three friends exploring the new maps for the first time. It's a team based mission oriented version of UT that uses the original monsters from Unreal and many of the original weapons as well. You and your group have to charge forward against incredibly unfair odds and loads of monsters through thought provoking maps. Some monsters are 40ft tall while others can kill you and they are no more than a foot long. They hang from ceilings, come out of cracks in walls, hide behind bushes, splash through the water, teleport in from who knows where and just keep coming around every nook and cranny! The concepts utilized to mark partial completion of missions and regenerating new respawn points are inspiring. Triggers and traps, layers and layers of intense challenges and hours of pulse pounding gib scattering fun! Truly only the very best of the best could create new, inviting, challenging and rewarding Monster Hunt maps. Are you up for it? I will be more than happy to beta test any works. I expect to host a web forum, ftp download site and already run a Monster Hunt server. I am part of several forums that all want the same thing: Good "Monster Hunt Maps" Please send the maps here to Nali City so they can be shared out and be sure to prefix their names with MH. Do a search here for any right now and you will find only one. This is exactly what I mean! This is your best chance to stand out and show everyone what you've known all along. You are the best map maker.

I played alot of the main MH maps,I kinda know what you want.Most of the levels are quite bad,it would be cool to have a unreal1 looks and Have it be MH maps.
Like it seems they make em with unlit walls and all boxxy ,very wierd,but I wish epic made the invasion for ut2004 MH instead.It would of been a hit.

But why??? Been there, done that. There are already so many maps with the "good old" unreal looks.
Man, I'm aching to see a fine monsterhunt map with a refreshing feel! A/multiple new, nice texture set(s). Why use those old, boring unreal textures over and over again...

Or at least use them in an interesting fashion. Maybe combine them with different earth/gfx/sky etc textures.

Iirc there's this map called mh-nightmarehouse. It did stand out,iirc, from the other maps.

Amazing! Two good responses but not a single taker? If I could pay to go to a class at the local college to do this stuff and if I had the time, I would learn how to map and pump out at least a few of these. Please consider trying this. At least look into all of the broke ones and fix them...

I've actually played MH for the very first time a couple of weeks ago and most them seemed pretty n00bish in design...well they were awful, what can I say
I might do one in the future, to busy with other stuff right now

Monsterhunt is in dire need of good mappers. People who understand the term gameplay. People who understand what makes a map look good. Understand colours, use of textures. What matches, what doesn't etc...

Why doesn't someone convert all stock assault maps and maybe golgotha whilst they're at it as well. I have played a conversion of Frigate, ripped it from cache and found no pathnoding in it. Give it bot support as well please.
Get hourences and DavidM, they might if we get paul mckenna. Or L.J paranoid. Put that up at UP, they like a challenge. Might do that

No Way!!! Rob, you made Kitara? This is awesome. I'm shocked that any of the originals are still around at all. I figured they all ran off to build in UT2K3 or UT2K4. I am honored to be on the same thread. Thanks for all that you've done for Monster Hunt. Spreading this request to others who might bite is a good idea too. Lets face it. I'm right. These are the toughest and most thought provoking maps anyone has ever built. Congrats on your efforts as they paid off huge. I didn't know Neo was a mapper too. I expect to learn how to do this if it kills me. I plan to make a long one. Lots of directions included. One route so people couldn't possibly get lost. Lots of hidden stuff too. I love those things that hang on the roof and shoot at you. Hidden monsters are always good unless they are only hidden by the fact that there is no light. I hate these dark maps out there. I could see having to face a regular strenght monster in the dark with nothing but a pistol and flashlight but these super strong queens surrounded by giant space crickets both of which are set to 15 times there normal life points is stupid. I'll stop here. Sorry I get a little excited about stuff sometimes. Great to see you here and better to see interest is starting to peak more about Monster Hunt. My server is the one called "MonsterHunt Mayhem" I feel like I've left it pretty straight forward so far with the one noticiable difference being 999 lives for all. Ok, later all. Thanks for responding, it's great to hear people talking about this again. It seemed almost dead there for a while. Now ithink we are back up to about 6-8 Mh servers. The best trick would be to make it a mutator instead of a mod. The only thing holding this back from being the biggest UT gametype is the fact that 95% of UT players don't know anything about this mod and can't get to it from the regular default search engine in UT. When you can run MonsterHunt Mutator on maps that start with DM-Something, then this thing will take off for good! Until then, I'm here trying to get this out to people to play it. Going well so far.

Gah, most of the stock assault maps have already been converted.
And each and everyone one of them sucked.
The only good monsterhunt conversion I've seen is as-gekokujou.

Try Mh-hispeed. It's terrible.. terrible I tell you.

Golgotha would make a fine mh map, but I'm not sure if the author would give his permission. If he can be contacted, that is.
Converting a map without the author's permission, is lame.

I tried MH-Hispeed. This has really put me off gaming for quite a bit of time. Grzegorz Kubicki is now a 2k4 mapper. I'll ask him about it and then MH-Golgotha will rule the MH mapping scene instead of Kittara sorry rob ;)

... which means you Neo. You've proven so far to care about quality and know how the editor works. It is time to show us. There's been enough "Yes I want new good maps but I don't want to dirty my own hands" or even "Someone else can do it, I'm too lazy".
I'm working on a new map right now but I don't want to be taken for the real mug.

Right now I don't have sufficient knowledge of UED2 to make a MH map which stands out. It's in my head, but ehhhh.. channeling it to UT.. won't give the result I'd want...

I know there are real experienced people out there. I'm not demanding them too make new maps, but merely asking. You don't have too of course :O) !

Sorry if the message came across as ordering mappers :O) Wasn't the idea.

But keep in mind that if you don't try it one day, you'll never "have sufficient knowledge of UED2". ;)

Well I've tried, made some experimental heh eh.. maps ;-)
Also downloaded the offline wiki, really usefull.

Thing is, there's real life demanding lots of time.. other interest (hell I like to draw a lot)..

I'll learn UED2 sure, it'll take time :B
