I was reading Stephen King's latest installment in the Dark Tower series, "The Song of Susannah." I had gotten to the part where Roland and Eddie confront the Author (! I think King has gone off the deep end since the accident) when a little slip of paper fell out.

I thought it was just a receipt or a cataloguing slip or something, but I picked it up and saw it was a bar-code with the serial number 79797 97979. I would have just ignored it except that the book plays heavily on numerology, and this seemed like a really strange serial number. Furthermore its printed on a sticker, and something was printed on the paper underneath the sticker. I held it up to the light and could make out what looks like a printed circuit diagram or the pattern on an integrated circuit. The label 8D is on it.

So does anybody know if this is a common thing in sales or shipping that doesn't mean a thing, or is Stephen King having a little joke on me? Has anybody else read the book and found a sticker like this one? I'm kind of afraid to peel the sticker off now.

Google is finding nothing...
I've tried every combination of:
Stephen King
Dark Tower
Song of Susannah
Sticker
79797 97979

Zip...
Most odd..

Maybe a photo of this sticker would help (all right, it probably wont, but im interested in seeing it...

I wouldn't have thought it was something that the book is sold with, i mean wouldn't the sticker just fall out?

Duh! Of course thats probably what it is. I just have never seen one before. But how do they disable it if its buried in the book?

EDIT: No, it was new :) . Sorry.

Funny thing is, I found the same Bar-Code in a the sixth books of Diane Duane's you wizards series. The tag was well wedged between the pages, from 200 to 201, and I had to pull it out of the book. After reading your first comment, I too held the tag up to light, and found not 8D, but 8O. After doing various research on the following numbersm 79797 97979, I found that hundreds of other's have found the same tag world wide.

Well whaddya know, this is an old thread. I thought it was started yesterday :) I never check dates. Someone could bump the first post in this forum and I'd take the time to think of a good reply.
