Browsing dead bodies

When a player dies, instead of just dropping everything around why don't you make him droping only his currently selected weapon and keeping the remainder of his inventory in his backpack/shoulder... When someone is passing by the corpse he can stop and browse the backpack in a graphical interface à la "Commandos 2" and select with mouse pointer which items and weapons he wants to pick from the fallen.
This will make it easier, more realistic and will avoid dropping the FPS when a bunch of clips, nades and weapons are spawned around the map.

P.S : Don't tell me that this can be set through the INI to make players drop only their currently selected weapon, everybody already knows that, and that's definitely not what I'm talking about.

I think this would be a great idea! Especially with the odd "green textures bug", you can easily tell when you have killed someone (as opposed to them feigning death) when they start spewing out all their ammo boxes out of their chest.

*BLAAAAERRRGH!*

Perhaps when you stand on top of a dead body, a new QA menu is available (similar to when you point your gun at an enemy, you get an additional "order this soldier" menu), titled "search dead body", and when you click it, you see all of their items! Infact, i think this is a flawless idea...

I agree; this does seem quite viable, in terms of easy implementation.

Yeah, because it annoys me when I'm trying to only pick up the dropped grenades and I keep picking up magazines for guns I'm not carrying.

Or worse, you kill someone who has the M249 and then when you pick it up by accident your loadout all of the sudden becomes so heavy you can't hardly move ... then when you drop the M249 your loadout weight doesn't seem to return to what it was. I hate when that happens.

Yes that would be great, especially if you don't have much stamina because you were hit and now you try to pick up the cd but you get so much stuff that you lose all your stamina ....

IIRC, sentry have been having this idea in mind for quite some time, so there must be a reason why it hasn't been implemented.

I've thought about this so many times.....

If you read this Beppo:

Could it be coded so that you only pick up the ammo for guns you have in your loadout, or even, just the current gun you're holding? Or, would it be possible to make the CD a priority over anything else, as in..."there is a minimi, 2 boxes and the CD, you pick up the CD no matter what first."?

There have been so many EAS matches where I end up grabbing somebody's M249 instead of the CD, when I'm clearly standng over the CD :( .

Yeah, that's always a fun scenario! Trying to pick up that CD buried under 6 40mm, an M16A4, a socom, a dead body, 2 claymores, 4 STANAG magazines, etc... Reminds me of that childhood game where you have to pick a certain stick without moving any of the other ones.

DeusEx, based on the UT engine, has a 'click to search' body function. I'd probably be possible to rip that item code right out of DX since it runs on the same engine version as UT. Problem is, not many coders have so much spare time.

I realize that you're Canadian....and I assumed you guys had similar laws as well....

But in the US, things like "Ripping code from other games" are illegal.

I think you meant to say...."You guys should copy that idea."

Stealing is bad! Ask our government! ;)

We could email them and see if they are willing to share the code.
a) would be of no use - I expect DeusEx code to be to much different from INF code to be easily integrated
b) DeusEx is commercial, thus they will not share their code

That's wrong. It's no worse than, say, copying the code you find for the Unreal Tournament rocket launcher and making it into a weapon usable in INF. You're still taking something from someone else. The only thing that matters is if you're going to SELL whatever you're making. Even then, if the grabbing code is the same, it's still not that bad. That's like saying you can sue someone because the code to move forward is the same.

People make mods and crap all the time using intellectual property from other people. It doesn't make sense to not be able to take the grabbing code.

There's still the problem where both mods (Deus Ex and INF) are nearly completely unlike eachother.

INF and DX are not the same beast Geno.

DX is a retail game, not a mod. INF is not a mod for DX. Taking source code from a retail game is illegal. Taking the rocket launcher for a game that you're modding for and implimenting it into your mod, is a completely different thing than stealing copyrighted retail game code. Just because it's the same engine, doesn't mean it's UT.

If you disagree with me on this one, I'm just going to have to find one of those infamous "U R TEH N00B!" forum pictures and post it here next time.

DX is copyrighted. End of debate.

Prove it's illegal. I'm not going off of your word, especially since you seem to have a huge problem with me, anyways.

Anyways, this is to everyone else, I figure I could try making a mutator like this, while PBH is making me the iron sight RC50 model. Don't hold me on that, though.

I already looked into copyright issues a little bit deeper.

Any UT code and content is protected by the usual international copyright by which noone is allowed to copy, re-use and so on until explicitly granted.
Saying that copying UT code is fine is the same like saying copying music and giving it to your friends for free is fine.
And AFAIK Epic didn't officially allow to copy their rocket-launcher codes, even not for free.

But Epic doesn't track you down if you create a new weapons based on their codes since its of their own use (it increases the value of their product). But if you take code from DX and copy it to INF (which probably isn't possible) and the makers of DX notice it, they probably WILL hunt you.

Prove there is god. Prove there is evil.

Just too much work for someone.
Copying code from DX would be the same as if you copied code from FarCry. It does not matter on which engine a game is based as long as you have copyright for your stuff. And if you make a program using code which is protected unter copyright it does not matter whether you are selling it or releasing it for free download.

Edit: Crossposted.
