Can we cripple or kill the language filter, please?

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

I posted on this topic in another thread for suggestions about the site, but the thread died shortly thereafter and so nobody said anything about it one way or the other. I'm tired of having perfectly good words like assess or repetitive get censored because they contain an "offensive" word as a substring. Thankfully it doesn't apply to reviews or I would have hanged myself by now, but still, I hate working around it in comments. The filter strikes me as something that does nothing to deter abuse, and does restrict legitimate use of the site. If someone wants to say **** in a comment, they'll just type it as F-U-C-K and it will get past the filter. I'd like to see the filter either thrown out completely, or altered such that it only censors entire words, not anything with a banned word as a substring. Yes, if we have it that way, then banning ass won't prevent people from writing assgoblin, assfeast, or assfragment, but most of the people I've seen commenting on maps who require profanity in order to make their point lack creativity anyway. :)

Heh , it could be worse. On ns.org the swear filter is so harsh we have trouble discussing about homosexual males or Dick Cheney

Is that ns as in the Half Life mod Natural Selection? If yes, then I know too that they're ridiculously strict.

That worked.....

That's great.

The filter has been disabled and foul language is flourishing once more. I'm not prudish when it comes to lingo so it don't mean nothin'.

It's a shame there isn't a filter that operates on attitude (mine included).

I don't suppose I have to bring the comments under Ironblayde's review of CTF-Hall Of OptimApollo3 to your attention.

Even by my standards (which you probably realise by now are horribly low) it's a bit beyond the pale.

If there was some way of filtering out bogus comments (mine included) I would welcome it because the two guys in that comments section (if it is actually two guys and not just the hurt mapper spamming your site and boosting their ratings) are really annoying.

What me get annoyed? Never..... (that joke is wearing thin Manticore).

Additonal: O.k., o.k. I reaslise this has been gone though before in the "comments and scores" thread but even I am starting to reach the limit of my very short tolerance for the type of narrow-mindedness illustrated by those two.

you then reach the "if we dont like your comment we use our power to **** you up" thing
its like forcing people to say what you want to see, cant really do that
on every forum thing there are idiots, and sure banning them would be nice but its not a solution cause itll create other probs
+ nature takes care of it, itll or fix them or itll make them look stupid themself:)

those guys are clearly friends of the author anyway, regged both a few days after review, and only logged in once, on the same day :)

You're entirely right and I'm entirely wrong. Despite my immediate knee jerk reaction to someone else's stupidity it would be wrong to restrict someone's freedom of speech despite the fact they don't accept the opinion of others.

Level playing field and all that.

I suppose you can't go around apologising for other peoples' behaviour...

The comment "nature takes care of it" is a very correct way of putting it.

I'd like to think that most people will realize, both from the review and from others' comments, that those guys are full of it. And if people do download the map against their better judgment, then a few minutes afterwards they'll kick themselves, curse themselves for fools, and know better next time. :)
