Valve Software announced today that those persons responsible for the theft of the source code for Half Life 2 and its eventual release onto the internet have been apprehended by their local authorities. I'm glad to see that those responsible will face the consequences for their unlawful actions.
"It was very uplifting to see how the community rallied and tracked these people down. Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community," added Mr. Newell.

Score one for the angry gamers! You can read the full press release over at ShackNews.

They are going to be punished for:

1) Proving Valves promises were lies.

2) Stealing what amounts to an unlocked car with the keys in the ingition.

That "justice" for ya...

Stupid beurocracies.

Crime v Indictment

It depends on how they are going to be prosecuted and under what head of legal power.

In my opinion they should be prosecuted under international Human Rights law pursuant to the U.N. Conventions for not destroying the source code and protecting the human race from another version of the worst FPS ever.........

Half-Life 1 was bug-ridden garbage and I don't feel sorry for the developers or distributors one bit. They made a fortune out of that rubbish and it was never well supported in the after-sales phase of its marketing.

O.k., yes, cybercrime is a concern and a real issue and, seriously, it should not be condoned in any jurisdiction. It will be interesting to see how these people are prosecuted, particularly if the execution of the crime has crossed international borders (in other words via the internet).

We should thank the developers and distributors of Half-Life for giving us a yard-stick as to how good shooters in the Unreal (and other universes) really are.

im sorry but you are a moron

1) since when is it valve's responsibility to give you a game? its up to them if and how they make it, and its up to you if you buy or steal it

2) since when is it ok to steal a car if the keys are in the ignition?

Im sorry but you are a moron.

It was never there responsibility to give us a game, however, they are not very responsible since they like to lie to hundres of thousands of people. First they werent smart enough to have a scure network and left there it wide open and were developing a game that nearly eveyone wants so of course something is going to happen. So becasue of that there source code was stolen which was all they had. The people at valve insisted that it was not the complete source code (even though that was all they had and they were going to release the game in a week or so). Then people started compileing it and it worked. Valve decided to use this source code theft as a convient scapegoat for the problems and shuch they they were having thus lying to hundreds of thousands of people.

Sometimes you have too look on the not-so-ignorant side.

Think about it: Valve hasent let anyone touch the game untill recently, why the hell would they do that? Any publicity is good publicity.

what a nice quote.

although in a weird way, it can be also said the same about the people that went and tracked down a copy of HL2 off the thieves.

Agreed. Also, if your read the whole press release it closes with a short synopsis/prospectus of that particlular company as a commercial and legal entity.

This is basically, and verbatim, the same line handed out by them when they receive complaints about their product and the lack of after sales support.

Not only does it inspire a lack of trust in them and their products but it implies:

"Well we are successful, so no matter what trouble you are having with our product or whatever your concern is; screw you. We're successful so that's all that matters."

Now is that community spirit?

What kind of modder wouldnt want the source code? Think of the possablitlys!

My understanding is that Half Life is the game that took the Quake engine.....

....and ruined it.

good for valve. just because they were retards with security doesnt mean that the people who took advantage of their security should get a way. why would you want to advocate the theft of someone's hard work? geez.
