Speech Recognition in UT2004 Demo

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Thankyou for the advice RaptoR! From what I've worked out, you don't need to get the microsoft speech SDK. All I did was activate the Voice Recognition features within the demo itself and then so long as you speak quite clearly, the game usually gets it right, there are occasional errors with "Assault" and "Status". Most of the time you can bark a long chain of commands to the bots and they still get it right.

thanks for the tip!

I was just playing around with it then and it reads my voice 1 outta 5 commands.

Looks like i need to train my voice more. But this feature is awesome.

Speech recognition? Where?

I did everything as you described and bots don't seem to understand me, despite I have trained the SDK for about two hours :(

I have the same problem (although I havn't trained the speech system for two hours). The recognition engine does, however, work flawlessly. The software supplied with the 5.1 SDK works well, albeit not with Unreal 2004. When I give the bots orders, nothing happends - they never respond to them. Do they confirm the orders in any way?

We tell you what you need to do to get this impressive feature of UT2004 functional in the demo.

This works really well in an instant action (local) game! I tried setting up a dedicated server with bots but they wouldn't respond to me there...any additional server settings need to be set in order for you to give orders to bots on a server you are connecting to?

Well, i've tried on another PC and again - no response form bots. I think it may be caused by another languge version of Windows, what do you think?

Problems with Speech Recognition and bots

I followed all instructions to a T. I can easily talk to other "real" people via public and team channels but I can't talk to bots. From the little feedback I've read, it seems some people are having no problems getting it working, yet there are others like me that are having no success.

I'd really like to know if anyone knows what might be causing the problem and offer a solution.

Thanks,

MrPresley

I think one of the more common problems is: you're not setting up a key to use the voice command, and/or you're not actually HOLDING it to give the orders. I had a key set up but I thought it was a toggle. That is why it wouldn't work for me even though I had everything else set up right.

-Make sure you have a key bound to activate it

-make sure you hold this key when talking to the bots

these are probably the most common problems.

I DO have my keys bound properly. I have been communicating with "real" people in game w/out problems. I did happen to get the bots to recognize me after about 100 attempts, but I am ignored 99% of the time. I have gone through about half of the speech recognition trainings and it appears to be working well in the application itself. But UT is having the problem. I am assuming this is something that still has to be improved.

The microphone activation mutes the game noises so there shouldn't be any background. I'd like to point out though that it's possible to add your own lines to the .xml files. Right now, just because my friend told me I couldn't be a cult leader, I've added lines so I can shout "My children, obliterate!" and watch the carnage ensue.

I'm having this same problem. I use the MS recognition tool, load the Onslaught grammar XML file, and it recognizes things like "Bravo cover me" perfectly. Say them in the game, the music cuts out while I hold the "F" key but nothing happens in response. I have the "Speech Recognition" box checked and have tried playing with the other sound-related settings but to no avail...

I wonder if it's related to hardware or OS? I'm using Win98 which is perhaps a bit old, but if the MS tool works, why wouldn't UT?

If all the software is set up correctly, it could be the mic.

When I first tried this in the demo, my mic vol was set up too loud. Since I don't use a mic often, I didn't know what volume setting I sould have used.

There is a feature under mic in MS Volume Control which has the [Advance] button (or at least on my computer is does). If you were to press this a window pops up and at the bottom it has an option for a +20dB boost. If this is checked, then try unselect it and then try the game. Or try selecting it if you think your mic is not loud enough.

Ok.. I'm not an expert on mics, but this is what fixed my problem... and I have a 95% command responce from my bots. Once you get this working, you'll really like this feature. :)

Does not work anyway...

I've tried everything you say, but I still get absolutely no response form bots. :( It's definently not the mic (tried 3 different ones), not the software (it recognizes me perfectly) and not my PC (tried it on 2 other PC's I have and got the same result...). The last thing I can think of is that either other language versions of Windows cause the problem or the demo has a bug in the SR system...
