I actually meant all models ... character, weapon, pickups, and vehicles, but I ended up just taking about character models. :)

Ah, I see. At this point I would even settle for one of those mods that uses stock models, but changes their function into something completely different.

Bingo! And herein lies the rub for gamers like me that came from UT2k3/4 expecting things to be even bigger and better. You just confirmed the worst fears for a lot of UT gamers whether they want to admit it or not. Sure we are going to get some really nice and fun and even good looking content ... but that really top level truly unique is probably going to remain elusive for some time as the current group of talented mappers raise their skill level even more through the release of more levels.
I think it would have remained elusive even if we were still here. Like I said, I'd maybe be halfway through a map by now, give it time! :D

[a **** load of text]

you know, instead of spending this much time on writing posts you could spend it on learning to use the UT3 Editor and make some really good custom content.

(you have to start somewhere, why not start at the beginning)

Honestly all the contest will do is draw people in it for the money, sure you can have money and love for the game but without the money you know its for the love :)

I agree. It will result in a **** load of crap rather than a couple of gems. Because a lot of people want to get a big piece of the pie. And we all know that the pie is a lie... erm... scrap that. Money, and the greatest idea evar !!!1!!111!!1one!!1eleven, are big problems in the mod community.

Anyway, I think I've ranted about this more than once in the last years, it was probably lost in one of the gazillion failures of BU.

hey, i'm just learning, and its tough. i got to beta on my map, but i don't like how it looks entirely, so i'm looking at learning Blender so I can model something. Too bad this is turning out to be way harder than I thought. The modeling i'm trying to do isn't really complex, but i have absolutely no experience with it.

Sure I could just use stock Epic stuff, but ppl are always complaining about that. You get flamed for not being original amongst other things

I am not talking about folks who are just learning the editor ... I understand that you have to start somewhere and I am not putting you down at all, in fact I applaud you for trying and really hope you stick with it and that in the years to come you become an A1 mapper. I think you missed my point which is fine. Its not that big of a deal obviously except to me and I can live with that.

And why can't I just remain a loyal fan who happens to have made an observation and was further clarifying what I said as not to confuse anyone? I I tried my hand at level design and I am not good at it so I am just a player, but there are folks who do want to design levels and enjoy (or used to enjoy doing so), these are the people I would hope see the point I am making and come back to UT3 and make some truly unique and hi quality levels and other content. And again I am not knocking anyone ... I merely explained how I feel about the differences in the user created content this time around.

Nothing wrong with using stock content to create new maps. There is something wrong with creating the same maps. Actually, it's better to use stock content (with a bit of new stuff) so that the new maps fits the theme of the original game. Custom/3rd party maps should feel like they are part of the original game.

You can remain a loyal fan, I don't mind. I don't see the point in being loyal to a commercial product. Or being loyal to a company that sells you products.
Maybe you're not good at creating maps (don't know how much effort you put into it though), why stop there. You can try other things. When I first picked up programming 16 years ago I wasn't good (well, I was only 10 so that's sort of a dead give away), it took me years to get where I am right now. And I'm still learning (and I doubt I will ever stop). I could have become a world class gymnast, but I chose programming.

Well, I wonder what you hoped to achieve by starting this thread?

It wasn't to insult mod makers, and you personally don't want to start making content, so what was your intent if it wasn't to just let people know "you're sad"?

Well that is pretty easy to answer ... it was on my mind and I wanted to gauge how many other folks are "saddened" (i'm trying to be diplomatic here ;) ) by the same thing ... it is a big difference and I would like to get people who have been turned off, chased away or whatever the reason they have left UT3 behind, to come back and help to get the game back to the level of greatness it was (in terms of user created content) in years past.

I am certain I made myself clear enough so that mod makers wouldn't be insulted ... especially given the fact I know most of the community mappers and I am constantly giving people encouragement to get better, and I don't consider being honest insulting.

I also did this in the hope you Epic folks would see it and think seriously about releasing some much better documentation for model makers and skinners on how to get their content into the game. As for making mods ... I already did my part for UT2K4 and I didn't appreciate how the majority of the community reacted to our effort (and I don't want to get into that here and now and reopen that wound) so as far as me doing any more mod work ... nope ... not gonna happen.

He wanted to assess what people are doing behind the scenes because not everyone puts out a beta or steps people through the parts of the map they've constructed. You can't tell what those people are up to unless you ask because they won't tell you otherwise. You also can't tell what people are getting hung up on unless you ask. This appears, to me, to be an observation of something going on, not sadness, insults, or a request for help.

Unfortunately, you'll never read this message.

:lol: You are making me laugh like hell but lay off the man for a while please. OMG I want you to get back into the community desperately BigD ... you know I think you have crazy skills ... but you can't keep this up with Jeff and expect it to happen. I'm sure he read your message but he is never going to apologize so get over that please. I bet if you just didn't mention him for two weeks straight you would find the ban at Epic forums lifted and you could start getting back to work on those great levels I (and others) so desperately need to stay interested in UT3. :)

^^^ I don't agree with that .. commenting on something that is true makes me sound like gimmeh already ... especially combined with how I act on the Epic forum boards? That doesn't make any sense to me. Especially if a person takes the time to read what I have said. Again I don't have an issue with the mutators but lets be honest as great as mutators are they are not the star of the show in the modding world when it comes to UT3. So please don't think I do not appreciate and love your work. I recall having and trying to promote a pack of mutators called Anuban's Favorites and newtators was a headliner, (actually my pack got something close to 1000 downloads so thats 1000 more gamers getting to play with these great mutators, yours included) so of course I love what is going on. Don't get that confused with my questioning the future of UT3 as a long term game with tons of replay value for those of us who do not play online ... and Epic themselves knows that there are a large number of folks like me. :)

What I have to say is that I miss DM-Hyperblast, DM-Morpheus and CTF-Face a lot. Most classic and popular maps... At least they kept the Deck series but Deck doesn't look like Deck16 nor Deck17 much any more :( I'm wondering if Epic will ever return them in a patch sometime...

There are plenty of things on the horizon to be looking forward to. The CBP team is/was (dunno where that's at) getting together to possibly make another mappack of bizarrely awesome quality, and our UCMP team announced that we are working towards releasing our first (and hopefully not last) UT3 mappack. There are some great promising talented people out there who make great content as well, and some of the veterans like Hourences have released at least 1 level or are working on one or more.

As far as UCMP goes, I can only say that we have all decided that it would be for the best if we approached the development of levels with custom content in such a way that we don't pressure our members into rushing things out the door. That worked for us in the past and it will most likely turn out to work this time too. One of the problems Slainchild already mentioned (which is the same for me as I work at the same company as he does) is that most of our members have gone pro with level/game design and/or 2d/3d art since the first UCMP pack for UT2004 and this takes a lot of time and inspiration/drive away from spare time development.

I have every bit of faith in the upcoming custom content by UCMP, CBP and the talented individuals slaving away to please the players.

You so took that too seriously dude :p

I understand what you were getting at in your first post but you really didnt need to reiterate again at the top of this page.

Well, I happen to be a modeller you know. Infact thats where my real passion lies, that and design but I couldnt get a coder to help me out so I started getting into that some more. Now the problem I have is keeping mappers around for any extended time but hey Ive been teaching modellers how to use the ed so who needs mappers right? Whoops sorry guys, mappers and modellers are kinda the same thing I guess but it depends, like you could get a guy who specialises in lighting and particles for all I know.

I dunno how it works in the biz, anyways for us modders I guess we have to be multi talented which can take its toll and sometimes can slow things down as we are working on say code when we need to get models done. The new editor certainly makes less reliance on coders but dont think all content makers are gonna be able to get away without any coding done what so ever.

So anyways if you want to know I got a project which is called Triggerman underway, I'll post a very early alpha shot since Ive been showing it around to a few friends anyways. It'll be atleast 6 months till we get an internal alpha test fully going and from there we might do some recruiting and take the project into full production. Im expecting mid 2009 will be first public release at the very earliest and thats being generous since we havent got the full production team together.

[screenshot]http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a123/OlympusMons/Triggerman/newshot4.jpg[/screenshot]

So keep your eyes peeled we got a teaser on the way but dont expect to see pictures of every little thing we do, this Im making an exception. You know what the matrix is? Yeah cause you saw the film right? Well yeah Im sick of seeing the whole game before Ive played it!

So know there are mods out there but you know, some people like to keep things secret and perhaps wet peoples mouths with mutators and other mods while they are working on design and alphas

Yeah I should note, that scene is done by a good friend of mine (v8matey) whos second in command on the project. I got some of my own stuff but yeah code calls at the moment :p

There is some Epic meshes in there as well but you cant really tell since its lighting only mode
