an original hardware problem

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

OK basically, my motherboard (ASUS A7V880) keeps crashing - and then the CPU clock speed is down to 1200 MHz, when it should be 1600 normally. The only thing that caused any relief was to reflash the BIOS with an earlier verion. Then it ran fine and the CPU speed was the normal 1625 MHz. Nothing is or has ever been overclocked on this board system. For about a day, then it crashed again and i needed to reprogram BIOS again. I noticed this happening while playing UT2k4 onslaught, but now find it happens doing ordinary things like opening web pages, etc...Now after it crashed I was able to reflash it once more and attain the normal 1600 Mhz CPU speed, but it only lasted about an hour before another cras. Any ideas? Things I have tried:

Defrags, video driver updates, virus scans, registry checks, windows XP reinstall, UT reinstalls, BIOS updates, windows updates, clear RTC RAM jumper...one person told me it may be a BIOS virus. If thats true how do you deal with it or is it just a lost cause. He also said it may be just an old dead battery causing all this...

This is meaning your CPU has become unstable and the bios is manually under clocking your cpu to get it to become stable.

Time for a new CPU or you could try and replace the motherboard but everytime I have seen this happen it has turned out to be the CPU.
