The International Game Developers Association, along with Epic, GameRecruiter and Blink Style, are running a level design contest, featuring, of course, Unreal Tournament 3, to be run concurrently with the ongoing Make Something Unreal contest. This should make those final stages a little more interesting. :)

GameRecruiter announced today the launch of the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest, a first-time level design mod competition that is open to all IGDA members, students and game industry professionals. Rules and contest submissions guidelines are available at http://igda.gamerecruiter.com.

Co-sponsored by Epic Games, GameRecruiter and Blink Style, this IGDA-hosted competition is partnered with the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest. GameRecruiter.com will help registered participants of the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest enter the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest, and contestants will therefore be eligible to win prizes in addition to those provided specifically for the IGDA competition. This includes cash prizes, as well as autographed posters, comic books and art books.

But whoa there, buddy! There's some caveats... always gotta read the fine print. And that caveat is that the contest is open to IGDA Members and IGDA Student Members only, but you can join them if you'd like. It is important to note, however, that people entering the IGDA contest will NOT be given preferential treatment compared to regular MSUC Entrants.

If you would like the full press release, you may read it right'chere.

UPDATED: (4:40 PM EDT) Eagle-eyed readers or RSS watchdogs might have noticed this post went AWOL for a little while. The original press release was a little bit vague, so we've sent some questions to Epic and they've clarified a few points. Among them is that international participants ARE allowed. The press release has been fully updated with this new information.

Rules and contest submissions guidelines are available at http://igda.gamerecruiter.com.

Co-sponsored by Epic Games, GameRecruiter and Blink Style, this IGDA-hosted competition is partnered with the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest. Thanks to Epic Games, GameRecruiter will provide complimentary copies of Unreal Tournament 3 via Steam to all contestants who register for the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest. Final review and response will be provided to all IGDA contest participants by Saturday, October 25. Submissions for Phase 4 of the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest will be accepted until August 31, 2009.

“This level design contest is structured to help aspiring game developers get recognition for their work and gain valuable experience within the mod community. We’re supporting this competition to encourage folks to be creative and make cool content with the Unreal Engine 3 toolset,” says Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games.

Adds Marc Mencher, CEO of GameRecruiter and Board Chair of the IGDA South Florida chapter, “The contest represents another great way that IGDA helps game industry professionals broaden their experience. There will be more events like these, as we partner with other game industry entities.”

Joshua Caulfield, Executive Director of IGDA, says, “This contest helps young developers get into the games business, and encourages them to sign up for IGDA annual memberships to receive similar opportunities in the future. This is also a way to promote community, professional development, and advocacy for our industry.”

Contest submissions for the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest will focus on categories including Best Capture the Flag Level, Best Warfare Level, Best Vehicle Capture the Flag Level, and Best Deathmatch Level. The best maps will combine great game play with strong visuals and good performance.

This is one vague contest.

The rules mention October as the end of MSU. So we have a grand finals date here?

And this:

Finalists from IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest will be presented directly to the Make Something Unreal contest, as additional contestants. Please visit http://www.makesomethingunreal.com/rules.aspx for official rules and announcement dates for the Grand Prize winners.

So, people who enter nice levels into this competition will also be entered into the grand finals of MSU and could technically win the whole contest?

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense?

GameRecruiter announced today the launch of the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest, a first-time level design mod competition that is open to all IGDA members, students and game industry professionals in the U.S. Rules and contest submissions guidelines are available at igda.gamerecruiter.com.
Does that mean "industry professionals in the U.S" or all of the above in the US only? Then why would it be a "worldwide level design contest"? What if you're an unemployed industry professional? :hmm:

Hey guys, I've spoken with some of you individually but would like to make some clarifications here as Epic didn't get to review or approve the initial press release, which contained errors. Sir_Brizz has an updated version.

- The IGDA contest is open to all IGDA members worldwide. You don't have to be employed to be an IGDA member. www.igda.org/join
- Epic has not changed the rules of the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest, and all submissions will get fair and equal consideration. There are categories for Best Level, Best Graphics, etc. for which the IGDA entries may be eligible.
- The IGDA contest accepts entries past the Make Something Unreal close date for Phase 4. We're encouraging anyone wanting to enter the Make Something Unreal contest to have submissions ready by the end of *our* submission window - August 31, 2009.

They don't actually mention the prizes - what do you get for 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc? Bit of a bummer that you have to be a paying member to enter. Also they say October 5 is the end date but then they say:
Finalists will have until October 5, 2009 11:59:59 p.m. U.S. EST to make updates, improvements and modifications they choose to their existing Submission.

Indeed. I can't see there being a great many entries, if you have to be a member, but can't be a professional....?

Yeah, I'm also incredibly confused by the many contradictions in the rules and descriptions. Like from a practical standpoint, if I wanted to make a CTF map for it, when exactly is it due? August 31st? October 5th? October 24th?

This suggests that it's due well after August 31st (if one is not going to bother entering it for any normal phase 4 prizes).

And this suggests that it's due well before October 5th .

So, I'm really puzzled, do we just split the difference and say it's due on September 17th?

Also, what kind of prizes might a hypothetical CTF map receive assuming that it doesn't win best graphics or best Use of physics, or any of the existing phase 4 categories?
IGDA site said:
Submissions for the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest are eligible for prizes in the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest as long as they are uploaded through Fileplanet and this site.

Epic Games will provide additional prizes including autographed posters, comic books, and art books for the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest. Organizers of the IGDA Unreal Engine 3 Worldwide Level Design Contest are free to provide prizes and promote entries separate from the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest as well.

This suggests that if your CTF map doesn't win best physics or best Graphics in phase 4 (assuming you submitted by August 31st) then all you can potentially win is a few autographed items plus maybe a few other things from IGDA organizers (if the feel so inclined). Is this really the case ???
