Ok. Just about every map I play, I notice one of these 3 themes:

Large map, with large open areas

Small maps, with tight areas

and the general in-between.

I'm tired of that. The only maps I can get decent fps on is the Small maps with tight areas. Here's the challenge...

Make a map that is fairly large (can hold 16-32 people would be a bonus ;) ), yet, with very few if any at all "wide open spaces". Think of a massive military testing facility, think of a nuclear reactor plant. Think tight corridors and lots of em'. Think of a 100 story building having a lan party ;)

I want a map where I can take my shotgun or mp5 and do some CQB yet have more than 2 bots on my team. Anyone else share my dream?

is that where we're going?

Games on such a map would take a very long time to complete, because you can neither reach your opponent quickly, nor see him from a distance. Is that the type of map people would like to see for online play? I doubt it. However, I may be mistaken; perhaps a poll would be appopriate?

MY IDEA

maybee on an open field level the mapaers could actually create a crop. Like a farmers crop. I would be such a b*tch to get through but toatally exelent to go prone in. I mean if i wanted to recover stamina id go hid in the hardest place to find me in. Rows and rows of cornstalcks=great cover. and for broken glass. you guys should try to make that hurt the guy. example guy gouing prone. crawls over the broken glass from an overhead window and emerges completly unscathed. or he suffers some small damage maybe about 20% but that all adds up considering there is no medical picckups availably as of now.

Calm down man, I think you should read at least the page of posts before you go posting after being gone for a long time/not even being here. That's been suggested millions of times.

Wow, not the response I expected... Hehe (that's good, I expected you to go off on an all caps idiot rampage, but I misunderstood you)

I like your idea, Xcept for the fact that grass is really hard to map.

I'm working on it...

Gimme some time, dammit! :)

I think there may be quite a few maps in development, with the traditional urban setting, that will do this...I know mine will - I plan to have a fairly large area (maybe smaller than you think, but...) with lots of rooms, balconies, crowded rooftops, staircases and basements. Have you tried DM-DarkCity? Maybe you're thinking of that, it's almost totally CQB...

My next map is going to be a Cold War missile base (lots of crowded areas, consoles to hide behind, big tape-drive computers, cramped corridors etc.) :)

DarkCity is far from what I'm talking about.. I'm talking about pure corridors, etc etc. Rooftops = wide open spaces, which are bad for me ;) Think of the inside of a school perhaps... Except multi-level and bigger.

Well, you're gonna hate my battleship map then (or rather your computer). Naval vessels have a tendency to be large and open on the top deck. Now, a submarine? That could fit your bill. I'd make one but I think someone else has already worked on one. I don't want to cramp their style, you know?

Hnn.

Well, I started working on one just like that, but soon realized that if you do an apartment building (or school, or office), not only do you have to do every single floor, all those floors will be identical. Not only would you get lost in like, anything more than a 3 story building (maybe even 2), it would also be boring.

Which is why DarkCity is fun - he managed to allow access only to some rooms, others are blocked off etc. So even though it's about a 9-story level (compact, but tall), it's interesting.

In my map I have three floors mapped out (out of a four-story apartment building) and I'm really racking my brain on how to make it truly distinct (holes in floors, explosions leading to outside, blocked doorways, fires, flooded areas, etc.).

However, for my next map, I'll rip off a part of that missile base in Rainbow Six: Covert Ops (I reviewed it...) - now there was a nice, mostly interior, map. So I see what you mean, but it won't be easy to do with just normal buildings...it'd have to be something custom made...like a missile base :p

How to create diversity in real life; Different carpet styles, different wall styles, paintings, floor numbers...

With mappers I always notice one thing (hehe, easy to figure out since I used to be a mapper myself): Very few actually think of using textures for diversity. Most are always thinking for in order for it to be diverse, it has to have different architecture... Just my observation of a few mappers.
