Why can't I see Packet Loss anymore?

You used to be able to tell how much Packet Loss you had by pressing F1 and see it next to your name under ping. But now they have removed it. It is odd. Since I loaded the 436 patch I have experienced more of it than before. I just can't see it now :(

/me wonders why Epic in their wisdom suddenly decided to kick it from the scoreboard.

It's been a pain in the a$$ to play clanmatches since 436 came out:

A: "We can't play on your server, it gives us shítty connection ....whine whine yadda yadda ...."
B: "Hey, what's your problem? You've got a stable 100 ping; stop complaining."
A: "Yes, but I've got 30% PL! Really!!! Your server is shít."
B: "Errr ...... could you please hit F6 and send me a screenshot as proof why you reject our server?!"

Even though the value shown on the scoreboard wasn't very exact, at least it gave you a rough indication about the other player's connection. It was useful and Epic should have sticked to it!

im sure their reasons were good. perhaps updating every person's packet loss lags... and few people check eachother's packet loss i guess :)

[edit]damn you cleaner you said it first :p [/edit]
it sucks because players are able to bitch about their inexistant or inconsiderable PL like its 50%...and you have no way of varifying it

I have been playing UT for over a year (almost every version). When packet loss was displayed on the scoreboard I can only remember one time that it didn't say 0. I have never seen F6 say anything but 0. So does that mean when people are warping all over the place that THEY are lagging or does it mean that the packet loss display is not very reliable?

I am west coast and have to play on east coast servers sometimes. I find it hard to believe that the east coasters are the only ones experiencing PL, yet F6 indicates that I have 0% PL.

bah I have a huge problem. I can have a 20 ping and then it just spikes to 200-300 all the time along with 0% pl that spikes all the way to 10%-50% out of nowhere on great servers.

It's intermittent so some people think im lying and **** =/

ahh well my dsl sux ass...

I had a strange experience lastnight(although it seems to happen a lot). I was playing on a server with a good ping and not a lot of people. We switch to a new map and the action was fine for a little while. Then the game just dies. It reports some packetloss and my ping doubled(from about 150 to 300). I had to reconnect to the server in order to get back into the action and it appeared that I was the only one that had this problem. Although during this time I could see my opponent running in place but no bots. There was 1 other player and two bots on the server when it died on me... again only packet loss for a bit and then it just didn't work.

This seems to happen a lot on servers that are running great on one level and then choke on the next...

I think the reason they removed it from the scoreboard was to be able to fit more names on the screen more neatly. Doesn't really affect your average 12 person server, but for the 24-30 person servers I think it makes a difference.

I thought you couldn't connect a 420 client to a 436 server. Isn't 432 and above uncompatible with previous patches? At least network wise. I know I read that somewhere.

You're right, Xhalted ... Cleaner should know better :)

From the 432 release notes:

- team scoreboard holds more players (no more names dropping off the bottom for 32 player games)

What they did to enable this is remove the PL line.

I thought that you could still connect to a 432+ server with an older client, just not as spectator or something?!

About the scoreboard ... :

DividedSky,
No, that's not what they did to to make more players on the scoreboard.
I guess you play UT on 1024x768? Perhaps you havn't seen an other trick that Epic introduced with 432: When you have too many players for the scoreboard, so that some names drop off the bottom, the scoreboard will be "compressed" (distance between lines reduced and some info removed) after 1 or 2 seconds, so that you can see all players.

If you compare the old scoreboard and the new scoreboard, you'll see that the PL info would fit into the new scoreboard easily. There is still plenty of space to display it:

New:

(Don't pay attention to the names on those scoreboards, I picked those screenshots only to show the effect. ;) It's not important in this context that I kicked Gouryella's ass. :D)

Good point ... and yes, I do play in 1024x768. I could've sworn somewhere that they dropped PL for scoreboard reasons but I can't find a definitive statement like that anymore.

But ... no client of any kind under 432 can connect to a 432+ server. That I'm sure of.
