I'm looking to upgrade my processor sometime in the future, but I also don't wanna go through the hassle of buying a new MB with it too... Right now I have a PIII @ 500MHz and a 100MHz FSB. The specs on my current MB say that I can upgrade to any non-Coppermine PIII processor with the same bus speed. My question is how fast a chip can I get that fits those specs?

I think 600mhz. I have a 650 in my other machine and I'm pretty sure thats a Coppermine. I think at 600mhz thats where you start getting the into stuff like the 600e(coppermine), 600(non coppermine), 600eb(coppermine 133mhz bus)

Damn

Yea, I just looked on Pricewatch and didn't find any above 750MHz, which is the minimum I wanted to upgrade to... Hmm, oh well..

You say 750? I was thinking that anything above 600 is gonna be a coppermine tho? and you said you couldnt use a coppermine.

A new MB with a faster bus along with faster and/or more RAM will be a lot more benficial than simply upgrading the processor a couple hundred mhz.

Yea, what I meant was I jumped right to the 750MHz chips and saw that all of them were Coppermines :)

The slowest non-Coppermine is a PIII 600.
The slowest Coppermine for Slot 1 is a PIII 550E.
There are also Coppermines for the FCPGA slot, which begin at 500 Mhz.

You should really consider to buy a new mobo aswell. But watch out for the bus frequency of your RAMs! I have the ASUS P3V4X: There you can adjust the RAM bus frequency sepearatly. Other mobos are capable of that useful feature too.

Yea, looks like I'll be stuck buying the whole shi-bang when I decide to upgrade. I'm probably gonna go with an K7-Thunderbird when I do. But then I'd need some PC133 RAM, etc.. I just didn't want that much work...

Actually that's not a bad plan at all. You could get a TBird and mobo for the price of an 800+ P3. Changing out mobos isn't that big a deal, just gotta get your hands a little dirty (or dusty) ;).
