From high to low. Yesterday, we reported on how Sega is pushing a new Aliens vs. Predator game instead of Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines or Obsidian's Aliens RPG. Well, the rumor mill is a-churning, and the latest bit of potential horse puckey out of it is that Obsidian's Aliens RPG has been canned entirely - and Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines is under the gun.

Sega has reportedly cancelled the Aliens role-playing game that was being worked on at Knights of the Old Republic II and Alpha Protocol developer Obsidian Entertainment.

The RPG was announced in 2006, but little has surfaced since. The cancellation apparently led to 20 employees being laid off, according to Kotaku's sources.

Sega is also said to be "reviewing" Gearbox's shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, leaving its fate unclear. Rumors that the game was put on hold emerged amidst November layoffs at Gearbox, but the studio quickly stated that the game was not "canned."

These are "just rumors", but Kotaku usually is pretty reliable.

I'm extremely upset to hear that after ****ting out one terrible sonic game after another, Sega's cancelled the only even mildly interesting console RPG concepts in years and is delaying a potentially EPIC co-op shooter so they can slip a similarly-themed one up to the top of the line.

Rebellion did great on AvP 1, they did crappy on their Judge Dredd game. While a well-done AvP 3 would be awesome, they're not exactly a sure bet.

I'm wondering if the success of Dead Space put a spanner in the works for this title since it's basically utilising the Aliens theme/story very well.
