Ensemble Studios, the development team behind the great Age of Empires series, is currently seeking "an experienced server architect to assist in creating a world-class massively multiplayer game." Furthermore, a Senior Game Programmer with "Unreal Engine, console, and next-generation renderer experience desired" appears on their jobs page.

While no announcement has been made, it's easy to put these pieces together, along with Microsoft's announcement that they would be using Unreal Engine 3.0 technology for their next gen stuff. It's certainly an exciting possibility.

Yep, nice one hal.
I've been thinking for a long time that Age Of Empires is utterly outclassed and obsolete (mainly at the hands of Total War), turning it into a MMOG is a way to make the series very unique and not have to compete with certain superior RTS franchises...

I liked the AoE games, never played them for too long but they were good for a few days of fun.

A mmo game would be cool if it was still like a rts, one thing i hate about rts games is my work being easily blown up. Be cool if we could build stuff that lasts alot longer.

If its just another mmo game then meh...

I bet M$ is using UE3 for Halo 3 too, but obviously they're not going to tell you that, they're just going to try to make you think M$ made the engine lol.

Nope. Definitely not true. Anyone else read the PCGamer article a while back on this game? It stated that the team was writing their own engine for the game and even had a coder dedicated entirely to water effects. It IS MMO however in one sense. You have a patron city that provides various bonuses that stay through all your games. If you do well, the patron city can be upgraded. The engine may very well be similar to UE3, since UE3 is DirectX based and a Microsoft game would almost certainly be DirectX based as well.

But you're assuming we're talking about Age of Empires 3. This could be an entirely different and unannounced game based on the Age of Empires franchise.

(I don't think hal is even implying that this is an Age of Empires game -- just that it is being developed by the studio responsible for Age of Empires.)
