Alcoholic, your review has got to be one of the lamest things I've ever read, that an FPS sucks because you played it all through on effortless mode! I can't think of any activity that is any fun (including sex /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif) that would be any fun in "effortless mode."
If you like combat type situations, SOF is good. It has great weapon models and great sounds to go with them. Learning to lean around corners is a nifty new trick that I haven't seen before.
As for the gore, I played it for a while with full gore, found it to be unneccesary (and embarassing if someone "still sensitized" was watching), so I turned a lot of it off.
I'm not saying the gore is a bad thing unless you happen to love it. If you do, maybe you are cut out to work in a slaughterhouse or a meat packing plant /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif!
In one sense, the gore helps to remove the glorious image that people get from watching the typical Swartzennager "sphagetti combat". Gunshots are messy things. Is it better to know about this or be ignorant of it? I dare say that many firearm incidents might not have happened if the shooter knew how much of a mess a gunshot wound made. Current efforts to prevent people from witnessing the effects of violent acts may actually lead to more violent acts being committed by those who are still ignorant of how repulsive a mutilated body could be.
I have wondered if it is better to go through life somewhat "desensitized to gore" or not? I'm not trying to endorse the enjoyment of wallowing in blood and guts, or severed limbs and heads! I would just rather be a little bit mentally prepared for some gore in case I should happen upon a bloody car accident sometime. I would be more useful to help if I were able to keep my intestinal peristalsis going towards my a$$ instead of my mouth!
