Here's a question for all of the elite players out there: What makes you so good? Is it your knack for constantly moving and firing your weapons? Did you master Doom and Quake and now UT is just the next step?

I've managed to finish anywhere from the dead bottom to the middle of the pack on most nights during a Capture session and really can't forsee myself at the top any time soon. If you were to pass along a few tips to those less wise, what would your top 4 or 5 pointers be?

Thanx,

While I won't consider myself part of the elite. I understand how to improve and what is needed. I have NEVER played a first person shooter until UT. But here is what you need to do in no particular order.

1. Know your maps. If you know where the powerup's, health, armour, weapon's are in advance you will do a lot better.

2. Dodging, this one can't be repeat enough. I constantly dodge, even if I don't need to, going around corners, etc. Just to keep myself constantly doing it, so it becomes second nature.

3. Learn your weapons! Learn what weapons work with what maps and how you can best utilize them for the moment.

4. Don't stand still! Always moving. A standing target is a dead target.

5. Spectate, spectate, spectate! I spend a couple hours a week watching players. You will improve a lot by seeing what they do. You can ask here on PuF and Im sure someone will mention what servers are good for what MoD's (I can help you with Assault servers, but don't know the DM, CTF, LMS, & DOM server.

6. Dont play on servers where you are finishing in the top easy. Play on the servers where you are getting hurt, alot. You will get better faster if you play against better players.

7. And the last one I can recommend... Patience! It doesnt all come together at once.

Well

Play alot...

always play on servers that present you a challenge.

Practice using ALL weapons, not just your favorites

Learn to avoid shots and dodge (MUST LEARN TO DODGE!!!)

Learn the maps well. Especailly common CTF maps (bottlenecks, Flag Carrier Routes ect).

Learn to Xloc like a madman. Not just to telefrag ppl, but to get around quicker. Also use it in long drawn-out fights to either run away or set yourself up for another good shot.

Go to clanner servers (like Swineonline or the Roost) and spectate. Watch what they do... then when you feel up to it, start playing...

Thats the best advice I can give.. don't give frustrated.. keep trying

These are all valid points ... I'd just like to say that it's important to keep having fun. The more fun you have the more you'll want to play, the more you'll want to improve. Also realize that there is a ceiling to how good you can get! How good you can get is a function of the following factors: your connection, your computer system, how much time you can spend playing ... and, well, your chromosomes maybe :) No matter how much I practice or play I will never be a Kravnos or an Overtoad (or even a Chimley or an Arzenal? :) - well I can get closer to those guys, at least) ... that's fine. Realize your limits and just have fun!

Good advice

Good stuff...keep it coming.

My "dodging" usually ends up with me dodging off the side of some cliff into lava or off into outer space. But I'm working on it!

Question: how or where do you go to just "spectate"?

Thanks again,
Old School

I don't claim to be great by any means, but I'll pass along some things I've heard and try to practice:

1) Play with players of greater skill then you (the greater the skill, the better). I spent my first 3-4 months of UT hosting my own server and joining random pubs. I thought I was pretty good because I generally owned everyone, and since I wasn't getting much better, assumed I had pretty much peaked in skill level. What I hadn't realized was that there was an entirely different tier of players that I had never run into (until finding PuF). I got my ass handed to me so many times after that (and still do) that I was pretty humbled. But I learned inifitely more in that month (and every game after that) of playing great players then I did in the entire 4 months of playing newbies prior to that (to my credit, I didn't know they were newbies :p).

2) Even though it's time consuming and you'd rather be playing, download demos of great players playing and study them. Some of the moves and tactics I've seen some guys use make me sit back and think, "Jesus, I'd be 87 years old before I thought of doing that".

3) Getting good at UT is just like any other sport, learn your weaknesses and address them, no matter how frustrating. If you suck with the shock rifle...use nothing but it for a week. You can't just say to yourself, "Well screw it, I'm just never going to allow myself to be without any weapon but the Shock Rifle"...because it isn't that easy ;). Once you address the real problem spots in your game, you can start fine tuning everything else until you've got your game tweaked.

4) Master every aspect of the xloc...from quicly navigating maps, to reaching special areas, to telefragging (*especially* telefragging). Have you ever noticed that it's highly underused by lesser skilled players and almost overused by great players (so much so that Epic had to fix it in a patch to make it more fair)?

5) If you play team games...learn to communicate with your teammates. Make speech/text binds so you can let others on your team know what's going on. Even if no one else is using them but you, it will still be a benefit to your team.

There's a slew of other tips, but I've got to get to work, and I have no doubt that all the other helpful PuF's will jump in and fill in the blanks...cya...

To spectate:

In your "Player Setup" screen there's a little box that says "Play as Spectator". Check that box. Join a server and presto, you're spectating. Hit your fire button to cycle your views through different people or float around from your own "camera" to check out the action. It's very entertaining sometimes.

The one thing above all else I have learned playing assault verse all these bozo's :D Ask. How do you hammer jump? How do you do the shock ho thing? I am no where near the best assaulter. Blood is, but he is modest. One thing I found that truly helped me though. find a setup for your controls that you find easy and relaxed to use. I use the arrows keys. doh! jump on ctrl, and crouch on numpad 0. I have my weapons bound to numpad 1-9 and the + key for 0. I use a track ball, Which I really like and am use to. If you are fumbling for you keys the other guy will be putting slugs in you. Alot of people like mice for UT, I personally can't see a mouse person getting near the POV control I do with my track ball. It's never lost off the pad  . Well in short I am not great, but I am better because of my comfort with my controls.

No no no!! I am not that good of an Assaulter and UT player, I just know map trick's and "wheez's" as my friends call it. :) Thanks for the compliment Phalanx, btw who are you?

As Phalanx is saying, key placement is so important. Other things that you may also consider doing. Get rid of the weapon on screen. This takes awhile to get used to. But after awhile your aim will improve because you will no longer be trying to aim with the weapon itself, but the crosshairs which is more accurate.

If you decide Assault is for you, email me @ boldarblood20@hotmail.com and I am more than willing to help anyone out.

Who am I?

Why me of course. {HPB}Phalanx. But I ussually play as Pacifist. Howie's crew. BTW I play PI8, GUM, WAR, and FU. That is another way I get better. Normally I play you on forge's fragfest default or custom servers. Don't lie you rule on Overlord ;). HPB is hiring, bring your 56k or less connection and be a HIGH PING BAS****. Let's showem a cable modem is not everything, but it helps. :p

...

LOL!

the HPB's rule! Howie is one of my favorite players! You should come hang out with us over on the #pi8 chat room. :) A lot of the US Assaulters come by there, typically 5-20 people hang out there daily. I am a HPB on the FU Servers... :( But over on the HoE servers (24 hour assault) Im a LPB.

The one thing that I love about Assault is that it's a team game. There is no need to be a one man show. You are only as good as the rest of your teammates! And my biggest problem, Im an impatient person, so I love the speed of Assault.

yeah

when I get home I will have to post my 2398 ping 27 sec victory in gaurdain fortress :). Maybe i will swing by and chat but right now my proxy won't let me out. :( I love assualt for many reason, speed being one. but when a team works together, ecspecially people who just jump in and play, man I have seen time run out on hi speed and frigate. Now that is D. Also seen (war)Omega, Gort and Pinky(PI8)<-- (I do believe) do ocean floor in 23 secs. how do you beat a time like that? Know what I saw the other day that really got me? On mazon after attacking team opened the libarary, the defenders ran in, grabbed the r/l and launched their own team out to the end. So when the main door opened, there were already snipers down range. that was ingenious.

That sounds like a good tip...the seeing the weapon has screwed me from time to time and I wondered if there was a way to get it off.

OK, I suck at impact jumping. I haven't really practised it much though.

I can usually get on top of crates and things, but leaping over the sub (or plank) in Novemeber... what's the trick to doing stuff like that? And how do you guage height/force requirements and things like that? What's the control sequence? What directions should you face/aim for various jumps. Etc?
