XP Home support... Obsolete soon?

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

This is a load of horsesh!t IMO. People are STILL migrating to XP Home, and they could be left holding the bag in less than a year. Not to mention the rest of us who had no choice in which OS we got with our computers.

i have xp pro, and when my mother bought a new pc, i talked her into getting xp pro with it. it wasn't due to these issues, but this is one more plus.

i imagine this will be a non-issue for most. once a new OS comes out, who cares if they are running that new OS? But for those left behind, it will suck.

not too long ago, more people were using 98 than any other OS. I wonder if this trend will continue with XP?

Quite frankly most programs that come out of companies are updated every year. Macromedia for example comes out with a new version of flash every year. Windows XP is about 2-3 years old. By the standards set by other companies, Windows is long over due for a new version.

I see windows xp home as still being useful for folks for the next 3 years or more with or with out security updates.

I disagree (unless you plan to keep XP-H offline). If they pull support, and another critical flaw is found (which WILL happen, it's just a matter of WHEN), then everyone still using XP Home is left in a lurch. This latest flaw is a prime example of what I'm talking about. And how many of new exploits are found each year?

Between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2004, Symantec documented more than 1,403 new vulnerabilities, which translates into more than 54 new vulnerabilities per week or almost eight new vulnerabilities per day. Of these, 97 percent were considered moderately or highly severe, which means that successful exploitation of the vulnerability could result in a partial or complete compromise of the targeted system. Furthermore, 70 percent were considered easy to exploit, which means that either no custom code is required to exploit the vulnerability or that such code is publicly available. Compounding this problem is that nearly 80 percent of all documented vulnerabilities in this reporting period are remotely exploitable, which likely increases the number of possible attackers.

Also, we're not comparing applications, but an entire operating system. Kind of a big difference, Your computer will run without applications, It ain't gonna do so hot without an OS.

Consider too, Win2K is still being supported, so why cut off their largest customer base from support in such a short time frame? Win98/ME is STILL supported and will be until June of THIS year. Granted, they cut off FREE support in '03, but it is still supported. So why cut off XP Home so quick? Whats the rush?

It used to be that most companies just released their product and didnt offer support for it after that point. Companies get going and they decide they want to do something better than the big boys so they offer better support and go as far as offering updates and fixes for their customers for a price. Another company comes out and does it for free.

Soon things change and companies start to drop support on products they want to drop or no longer want to invest money in fixing. A lot of video game companies out there do the same. Release the game then they dont support it or support it but to a limited amount.

Sometimes you make more money this way, other times it just hurts you.

I agree, windows xp home edition is probably the money maker for MS. They should support it for years to come.

Ya well I like winME , XP is a bunch of crap, the best combo is I have win2000, but dual boot for winME.
And I only ever called Microsoft once in my life, and it was after the 90days so no help, they can kiss my ass.
And if I were the judge for all those court cases thier punishment would be free tech help for 80years for all.

I installed XP and was surprised how it did work , it was a 12gig hard drive and a pentium 500 with 256 ram Gateway, and it seemed to work, so I got to give them that, but it's bloatware, win2000 is XP without all the useless crap.
