For general information: If I disappear for a bit, there is a large fire near where I live. Part of my town has been evacuated. If the fire gets too close to some power transformers, they will probably shut it down, so I may lose connectivity.

I attach a pic from ~15h ago of the fire crossing the ridge. Not the best, but it's what I've got.

Anyway, this is why we don't want gay boy scouts. It could have been started by rubbing two sticks together.

I'm guessing that's the Rancho Cucamonga blaze just outside Los Angeles.

Here's theCNN.com article on the fire.

Yeah. Right now over Irvine it has a nize, orange, haze. of course, this isn't as bad as that fire a few years ago, but it's still pretty bad.

I picked "cheese." I don't think that has anything to do with the question, though.

The sky was dark today, 3pm was like twilight. The horizon glows red from the northeast to west northwest. I can see the backfire from near my home. The glow is kind of disconcerting because it's not that different from the way the sun looked through the smoke.

Everything is being covered with ash. Perhaps I will post a picture of the ash tomorrow.

It was smoggy in West Los Angeles, today and yesterday, after being especially clear for the last several days. Damn fire.

This just in: all of the fires in California were caused by the state legislature - those flaming @ssholes have done it again.

With the right tune, this could be an industrial track.

At some point another fire started in Otay Mesa, and today I was actually able to see that fire from my bedroom window; it was no more than 10 or 20 miles away! It showed up in the afternoon, went down the mountain for a few hours, and fortunately was stopped by the Otay Lake. I thought everything was ok, but when I went to look out my window in the evening it was back again and worse than ever; it was burning more parts of the mountain that didn't get hit the first time and was more widespread. Fortunately it went away from the communities again in a couple hours and it looks like it's continuing to retreat. Hopefully it keeps going farther and farther away from the communities nearby and just goes away soon before destroying anything more.

Pictures: Each one follows chronologically; I don't have the ones from the evening appearance posted yet.

h.h, how close did it get to you?

The roads were closed about 1.5-2 miles from me, but they've reopened.

If I remember correctly from the last time I drove by the mountain that was on fire yesterday, it was about 15 miles away from where I live. It actually got pretty close to threatening some communities that were closer to the mountain, to the point that they issued "recommended" evacuations for that area. Luckily, despite that mountain catching fire twice, in the end (around 1:00 AM last night) it had retreated and eventually gone out. Looking out my window right now, the sky is completely filled with white smoke, since this morning, and I can't even see that mountain at the moment. Much better than black smoke, though. This is but one of the pieces of the big wildfires spread across California, however; last report I heard (around noontime) was that the Cezar fire is still really big and out of control.
