Why can't I detect a Unreal Tournament Game on a LAN?

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

I regulary attend LAN Parties, but last time, I couldn't detect a UT game in progress. Now, I had all the options correctly, (LAN connection speed, and... thats the only one:)) but I couldn't join or even see a running game. The others could join easily! I didn't change anything from the previous party. Can anyone help me?

My specs. Or something like it. But not for long. Getting a new PC. Shortly. OK, here comes:
-Pentium 200 MMX.
-64 MB SDRAM.
-4 MB Monster 3D.
-Latest UT Version.
-Arowana 10/100 MBPS Fast Ethernet PCI Card.

We connect the LAN-Computers using a 8 port HUB patched together with UTP cables. Funny thing is, I can play other games like Age of Empires. So it has to be Unreal Tournament! Can anyone PLEASE help me! A LAN weekend without LAN games is... not a LAN! And yes, I clicked on Find LAN Games! U Donkey Attachement!

Try assigning a IP address to your TCP/IP Protocol. If you are running the 432 or 436 patch,Try using 425 or 428.I was having a problem with UT in the WIn ME OS.Here is a thread on what I finally had to do:
http://forums.planetunreal.com/showthread.php?threadid=27986
You do need to assign an IP address with WIN ME.I am running the 428 patch and have had no further problems.I tried 432,But it caused more problems than it fixed.
Hope this helps.

Just a couple of ideas that I use when my lan acts up:

1)Connect to the server computer with all clients using network neighborhood. If it can't find it, click run; find; computer; "sever computer's name" and it should show up. Then run UT with network neighborhood still open.

2)Still not working? Restart all computers and do it again.

I hope this helps. Good luck. And, if anyone can help me, I have posted the need for help with the patch436nodelta updated. Everytime I download I get a corrupt file. Please help. Thanks

If that's the case, then try copying the unrealtournament.ini file from a working machine over to yours (keep your user.ini file though) and see what happens.

If you guys are connecting to 436 servers, it could be that the version being listed in your ini file (perhaps saved from before the upgrade) is listing a lower version.

I noticed this pretty quickly for myself because it is common practice for people to save their ini files, upgrade, and then copy those files back without making sure they are updated for the new patch, ie., there's a line in there with a version listed. I know that older clients won't be able to join to play (or see, in many cases, despite what they claim) the 436 servers.

unrealtournament.ini... in the system folder, right? Thanks we'll try that next time! Im sure it'll work, cause on the previous party, where everything worked mighty fine, I could play using the 4.28 patch. Now, we were using the 4.32 patch, and I heard that it was quite a bugger.

Well the 43x's are my bane right now - but to be fair, it's only some skins and mods that are now broken - for me, the ChaosUT mod on a 43x server and it not allowing me to get in correctly with my 436 linux (that has that mod installed as well and working fine locally).

The 43x's were done primarily to fix the skin cheats (thus the non-backward compatibility by removing the offending code and not allowing it back in play via a client that still has it). But they ended up unfortunately breaking some of the legit ones and the mods.

Good luck though! :D

Oh... make sure you backup your current unrealtournament.ini file and when you do copy that other ini file over, make sure the audio/video sections from the copied over file are adjusted for your hardware, ie., the ini file on the "working" machine might have different audio/video cards and rendering configurations setup. You can actually compare your original with the new one and adjust/cut and paste accordingly.

That's what it does when you patch! It deletes your old unrealtournament.ini and starts over with a new one. I think the default assumption is that you're doing a brand new install, are then patching it, and THEN you'll run it "for the first time" to configure it. That's why they tell people to back up their ini files before patching an existing install. You'll see that when you start it up after patching and it starts scanning for your video just like it did that first time. When you see that happen, you'll know your original file is bye bye. :(

I think they do it because some of these patches are adding extra sections into the ini file (case in point is the "AL" or "AD" or whatever audio section that has recently been added). But then for them to tell folks to backup the old one and restore it after you patch, means that you're now possibly missing a configuration section that is new with the patch but was not there in your original ini.

I guess if they put something in the readme to say - "Please change the section [First Run] in your original ini file to reflect the new version XXX and also add section so-and-so to the same file, BEFORE copying it back to /system after patching"... THEN I think alot of the problems would subside some...

Oh well... I'm just glad it even works on my Linux! ;)
