Glorfindel
In the Silmarilion he was Lord of the people of the Golden Flower in Gondolin. He was called Golden Glorfindel, Elf of Gold-tress, Glorfindel of the golden mane.
My Tolkien is a little old but if I remember right... noble elf of Gondolin, he fell to death locked in mortal combat with a Balrog after escaping from the sack of Gondolin by Morgoth when they were pinned in the mountainuos regions of Amon Gwareth. One of the two captains of Fingon, High King of Noldor, the other captain was Ecthelion or something that unpronouncable.
Glorfindel was locked in single combat with a Balrog on the slopes of Cirith Thoronath as the elf army fought a holding action against Morgoth's hordes of orcs to allow the refugees of Gondolin and Turgon and the men of Angband to flee. Both the elf and the Balrog fell off a precipice into "a great emptiness". The day was saved with the arrival of the great eagles and Thorondor, King of Eagles, bore Glorfindel's lifeless body out of the abyss "and they buried him in a mound of stones beside the pass; and a green turf came there, and yellow flowers bloomed upon it amid the barrenness of stone, until the world was changed"
In the Third Age of Middle Earth during the events of Lord of the Ring, Glorfindel is of Elrond's household in Rivendell. He is an old friend of Strider and Gandalf, and seems to be one of the more important elves besides Elrond - there were few major elf players in LotR compared to Silmarillion. When Frodo and company approach the passes near Rivendell, they were attacked by a Nazgul but Glorfindel protected them, saving Frodo's behind and allowing them to escape to the safety of Rivendell.
All things considered, Glorfindel in LotR was the reincarnation of the one in Silmarillion. Where the old Glorfindel died fighting against a Balrog, the new one survived and lived happily ever after and all that. I dont remember him playing any other significant roles.
My favourite characters are Galadriel, Tom Bombadil and Goldberry - even if the last 2 were secondary characters. Now, uh, what was the question

Shit Happens... and with great regularity too. We just have to deal with it one turd at a time.
