This may be considered a dumb question by many, but here it goes...

What is the objective being aimed for with UTXMP? Is the objective to duplicate U2XMP as close as possible, making an exact replica if possible? Or, is the objective to create a "xmp style" game which has its own unique game play characteristics which may or may not be exactly like U2XMP?

The reason I ask this question is because many of the so called "bugs" being reported are really comments about how UTXMP is different from U2XMP. But, if the objective is not to replicate U2XMP, then these comments should not really be considered "bugs" at all.

I, personally, am totally fine with FMI making a xmp style game which does not exactly duplicate U2XMP. U2XMP is what it is. UTXMP is not the same game, and does not have to be the same game.

So, for example, if the grenade launcher reload rate is slower in UTXMP, so be it. That is the way it is in UTXMP. It is not "wrong" or a "bug." It is just different from U2XMP and something I need to get used to as a player.

Something like the re-spawn problem is a "bug" because it is obviously not the way it is intended to be under the game UTXMP.

I would appreciate FMI speaking on this issue of what the objective is. That way people, like myself, will have a better understanding of what may or may not be a real "bug" verses a "characteristic" in UTXMP. And, I can make more infomed and helpful comments to that end.

If this subject has been addressed before, please direct me to the link so I can educate myself. Thank you.

I agree that an xmp-style game should be created, but IMO, the nade launcher delay is unbearable in ANY game. If you want to create a game like that, I would suggest offsetting it by making the weapons switch faster, so you could get a shot off with another weapon while waiting for the nades to reload.;)

I hope you didn't misunderstand me. I was not trying to endorse or criticize the current grenade reload time. I was merely using that as an example to try to illustrate my question and point about what the objective is for the project.

I see UTXMP as the successor of U2XMP and I think many people do agree with it, since it gave a lot of trouble in the past because of differences.

dont get me wrong, im open for new things, but I think the old ones should work first and since the gamebalance worked in U2XMP almost perfectly, it comes out to redo it as close as possible.

After version 1.0 there can be talk about flying vehicles etc. but first the fundament ahs to be ready.

TBH, I don't think it matters. Just play it and have fun. A few things to consider though:

First off, the 2k4 engine is actually a DOWNGRADE from the U2XMP engine. While UT2k4 has MUCH better netcode and runs smoother no matter how good your system is, it lacks alot of the features of the U2XMP engine. So, an exact copy of it is unrealistic. A good looking game with mostly the same gameplay is realistic (though amazing amount of work.)

They're also adding stuff Legend wanted to do but never had time to finish and implement in the original like the female ranger model (and VoIP, but that's in UT2k4 by default.)

Lastly, as the people who beta tested U2XMP know all too well, 7710 was never a finished patch in fact it was never even a tested patch. While that's the version of U2XMP most people are used to, it's definitely NOT the definitive version of U2XMP. Personally, I'd prefer to measure UTXMP against 6496-7 rather than 7710. 4 months of testing went into 6496 and while the same people were testing the patch, we were still finding significant issues in all the patch builds we were getting between 6496 and 7710 (there was at least 5.) 7710 was an improvement in many areas but also opened up other problems. So in making UTXMP, patching U2XMP past 7710 needs to also be considered into the mix.

PRG: Thanks for the perspective. Helps me understand a little more. I want to be supportive as much as I can.

Just play it and have fun.
Absolutely!

In other words, you need to consider things that didn't work right in 6496-7 and 7710 and doubtlessly would have been patched in U2XMP IF Legend wasn't shutdown then "fix those issues" while making the mod.

The way I understood UTXMP was U2XMP (on UT2004's more optimized engine) + Bug Fixes + Further Balancing + Other unfinished stuff (female ranger, etc.)
