What can you do with the knife?

We've already had a long discussion about throwing the Ka-bar, and the end result was a no, IIRC. It's not really made to be thrown, and generally militaries don't teach knife throwing, you'd have to go pick it up after one throw, coding/animating the throwing would make for even more work for the INF team which means later releases for 2.8/3.0 and it probably wouldn't be worth it all.
I don't know about you but I will probably make good use of the knife, especially in loadouts that include lots of explosives and such, I might decide to not take a pistol and some mags and to just go with the ligher, cheaper, knife for a backup weapon.
Oh, and as for the topic question: You can kill.

why not lock some doors and one could use the knive to lock pick them?

Yeah, that's the kind of stuff I mean.
Like, you should be able to just draw your knife, hold the attack button, and nothing happens. but as SOON as you are within range, you automatically start slashing like crazy. And you run faster, quieter, so that you can really do a stealth kill.

That really makes sense. If i whip out the knife i can run faster. Oh ya. I can imagine why you would think this, but the weight is still there and if you had a gun it may be even more awkward to run with it in your backpack.

Shooting out locks is not nearly as easy as it looks in movies. Quite often, people try this and get a richocheted bullet in the leg.

Rifled slugs are used for taking out locks. Flechettes are used for weakening the wood around the locks/hinges. even then, I wouldnt try this without at least a nomex jumpsuit.

Shotguns work great on wooden doors. I haven't seen any1 try it on metal ones though... (what can I say? I live on a farm, there's a great many things that can be used as targets). In any case, the ricochet of a shotgun is generally not a problem, and definately not if you stand ten metres away (which is nothing). Those little pellets have so little individual kinetic energy and deform so easily that after hitting something, like a wall, they aren't much of a threat to anything except maybe your skin.
