I have an AMD k62 500mhz 128mb ram voodoo3 3000 pci. I am having some sort of major troubles here. I get 9 fps in U/T yes 9fps. No matter what res or settings it is at the highest I can get is 15 fps. I need help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. All 3dfx games seem to be slow, even the demos that come on the voodoo3 cd run slow. Please help!!!!!

Have you overclocked your card? 'cos it might have been damaged by it. I also had the same kind of prob but it was because windows had some how installed both V3 and Standard vga driver's. Once i unistalled the vga driver my V3 worked fine. You might want to check that.

Make sure you haven't got all the graphics settings on high cos it will take one ***** of a machine to run that!!

Ok, I've just benchmarked UT city intro with my K6-III 400@450.

I got an average of 43fps (running it 3 times)

I used a res. of 1024x768, highest quality textures & skins, no 3d sound & absolutely no tweaks.

I know the K6-III is a lot faster than the K6-2 but 9-15 fps is sick! Something is seriously wrong with your config or setup. You should at least get an average of 30fps with your machine.

My specs:
AMD K6-III 400@450 Mhz
128 MB PC-100
V3 3500TV (using latest 2000/3000 betas!)
SBLive 1024 (Latest May drivers)
EPoX EP-MVP3 G2

got nearly identical system:
k6II 450
voodoo III 3500
I get something like 37-39 (1024-768) fps but it depends on levels. resolution does not matter. CPU is bottleneck.

Best option: Throw out the amd. and buy a cheapo celeron. increase your fps fivefold.

I'm having the same problem with a K6-2/500 system.

Asus P5A
AMD K6-2/500
128 mb PC-100 Micron Ram
Matrox G100 AGP
Diamond Monster II Voodoo II PCI
Win98SE

All the latest drivers are installed. This system pulls 9 - 12 FPS in low res, low texture detail. Pathetic. These same video cards ran at 30-35 FPS in a K6-2/350 with the same Alladin V chipset and ram. I'm baffled. Is the K6-2/500 a piece of crap or what? I'm about to drop that same K6-2/350, mentioned earlier, into this system. I will publish the results here tomorrow.

OK, here are the results..........Yes folks, the K6-2/500 is a dog. After installing the K6-2/350 in this system, it pulled 28-32 FPS in UT 405 with the exact same settings and the same map (Deck16). I re-installed the 500 once more and it pulled 13-15 FPS with the same UT settings and map. AMD says this chip is 1/3 faster than a Celery 533. I don't think so......"Houston, we have a problem......."

Well this is still why i'm in doubt to buy an Athlon or again an intel cpu.

Few years back i had an 486dx2 from amd, and i coursed my only trouble and headache, also tried a cirrex cpu, and that was even worse, sinds then i allways had intel, and still i doubt beteen the 750 Athlon overclocked to 1.2 Ghz, or an real Intel 1Ghz processor in an dualboard (for later adding a second CPU, like my dual p2-400 now)

I've got a K6-2 400MhZ, Voodoo3 2000 AGP, 96MB RAM. I can barely squeeze 25 FPS out of the bastard. It quite literally drops through the floor when on crowded indoor levels(CTF-Gauntlet+more than 8 players=10 FPS)and there doesn't seem to be a damn thing I can do about it.

I know the Athlon is supossed to be pretty good, but I'm kinda fed up with AMD right now. I'm just going to save some more bucks and go with a pee3.

I don't know about your systems, but I had a k62 450 and a 400, both with voodoo 3000's. And it ran pretty well. I got about 30 - 40 fps on high detail and medium skins, with no 3d sound. Wasn't too bad. My guess is that something else is screwed up. Since the fiasco amd had with there k62 350's, I have had no problems with them whatso ever.

I am not condemning every K6-2/500 chip, but I do think that AMD has released a batch that has very poor FPU performance, though not bad enough to fail QC testing. In general, the Athlons I have seen are awesome and you can't beat the price. If you plan to run a G-force with an Athlon, do thorough research first as there are some compatibility problems.

Don't be afraibd, the Athlon rocks :)
I have one for myself, and there's no similarity to the K6-2...

Loibisch

It has equal power to an Intel processor of the same clock speed (sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less)

9fps? what the hell? That's sad! Do you have this problem with all games or just UT? I have a Celeron 500/GeForce SDR and I'm getting 43.7fps average on the intro.

There's definately something wrong there somewhere. You need to get your system checked out somehow. There could be something wrong with your V3 too. In any case I'd say give the K6-2 to your dog as a chew toy, it'll get the food out between his teeth better than a milkbone!

So a K6-3 will help me?

I have a K6-2 450 and it's, well, not great. I get spectacular FPS when I'm not looking at a player, but I get around 27fps in CityIntro, and when three or more players are on screen, it gets hectic.

I can't upgrade now, I can't pay for it. I have no source of income, and my parents do not like spending money on me :(

I really disliked my K6-2 400...seemed to overheat almost every hour. I dont doubt these posts for a second.
I was kinda skeptical of buying an athlon after that experience, but the risk was worth it. I havent had one problem with it, and I havent heard any horror stories about them either.

dont get scared about amd....the k6-2 and 3 arent really very good at all...not much better than a regular pentium in fact.....
i got me an athlon 700 with a new motherboard(cost me 250 bucks in all) with 2 voodoo2 cards in sli and i am getting like 70 fps at all times.....the athlon is a GREAT chip....same performance or better than a p3 until you get past the 700mhz mark(then they lower the cache size) but anything 700 or below kicks a p3 *** anyday....

so if you want a fast as hell chip and dont wanna shell out the 500 bucks for a pentium3 at 733mhz just get an athlon plus a new motherboard @700mhz and you will be cookin!

This is not 100% right. They don't lower the cache size, but the cache divisor grows...
500-700 MHz = divisor 2 (cache: 250-350MHz :p)
750-850 MHz = divisor 2.5 (cache: 300-340, slower than the 700s' caches)
1000 MHz = divisor 3 (cache: 333 MHz)

This certainly slows the processor down, but is also the reason why they're so cheap...
I for myself have an Athlon 700 ( :))and it kicks *** !

Loibisch

They're much cheaper than an Intel processor of the same speed...and even fast.

I dunno about the low fps. My k6-2 400 runs 27fps most times with people. City intro is 40. I have a voodoo II 12MB and 64MB RAM so I keep the res low @600x800 and settings medium. that might have something to do with it but no problems with the chip.
