UT99 on Wine

So both UT and the original Unreal run under Wine, but I'm struggling with some graphic bugs that seem to be unique to these games. The short of it is that I see black stripes on a lot but somehow not all textures (and in some cases, odd colors). Some appeaar up close, others only from a distance, suggesting maybe a problem with mipmapping or something of that nature. Areas with heavy fog seem affected in a different way.

This happens on all compatible rendering modes, aside from (obviously) software rendering more. Other, more modern games aren't affected. Does anyone in the UT community know what might be going on? I'd post this on WineAppDB, but I'll be a father of three children before I get a response there on such an old game.

UT99 is patched up to the 'latest' version, which escapes me for the moment. Otherwise:
Xubuntu 13.10
Wine 1.5.29
Ati Radeon x1250

Hmm, would you be using the server textures by any chance ? I know these can cause issues, sometimes with character skins.

v436 is the final official version. Not sure what 451 runs like under Wine.

Are you using the old DX5-7 renderers, or have you updated to DX9 (or the fixed OpenGL) ?

Or try the new beta versions

If it is a fresh install, you may find this list just what you need.

I haven't tried any different renderers than the ones that come with the game. Thanks, I will try them out tonight if I have time.

No, I was just playing a bot match or two. I did try to get on a random server from the server list, one where there happened to be people online. It downloaded some packages, but then I got some sort of version error. It's probably not related to these issues though.

451 seems to run fine under Wine. Those graphic glitches are still there, but otherwise it runs fine.

Tried DX9 and the new OpenGL. Funky stuff, noticed a definite performance increase, but ultimately the same graphic glitches occur. Also I swear some of them look even more screwy than before, but that may be the fact that I'm looking at these graphics during night time now. I don't know, it's my guess. I didn't test the beta drivers. I might try that later, but for now I think I can predict the results.

I'd rather try and look at this from a different angle first. Like, how could roughly the same graphic glitches be occuring in both DirectX mode and Open GL mode?

I think it's safe to assume you are not using server textures.
"Server textures" are minimal textures just for a server, as generally no-one is playing on it.

If you have added the DX9 and replaced the OpenGL, you will now have a huge bunch of new options (even 2K4 does not have renderers this modern).

To access the advanced options window (like Unreal has), open the console or hit the TAB key. Type "preferences" and ENTER. (This works in all other U-games)
Check the "Display" section first for anything that stands out.
Then open the "Renderers" section and tweak-away.

Raynor wrote the best guide to the new renderers, and recently turned it into a PDF
http://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=373

The new Oldunreal Beta renderers come with optimised defaults, they may be useful as a start point.
I've made new config files that show more useful info for modern users, when you change video renderers.
I just checked, and they are all in my repackage of the last version of the "OMP" pack.
Go back to the UT page at "Your Unreal" and at the bottom of the page there is a download "OMP-UT-V0.3.7z"

Have you tried the Linux version of UT ?

Thanks. I checked out the advanced preferences before (I was at some point in the past quite familiar with them), but that was before I updated to those unofficial patches. I'll check it out.

I have heard of the Linux version of UT99, but I heard it wasn't so good. I can check it out at least, see if the same problem keeps happening.

somewhere; sometime?
ugh.
why must you people rebel against Microsoft?

all it wants to do is spread its homogenized, easily accessible, and cheaply produced operating systems to the far corners of the globe until every man woman and child thinks of "apple" as nothing more than a seed-bearing fruit which also makes for good cider.

is that so hard to accept?

Helpful.

Actually, in this case Microsoft rebelled against me. Ran into some unfixable system corruption. Couldn't reinstall Vista (old laptop) anymore due to the surface damage on the partition that held the dvd image. Any OS newer than that would have killed the machine.

I had my laptop up and running again in less than an hour after I diagnosed the problem, including all my games. UT99 is just a nostalgic curiosity.

Anyway, just got back from a holiday trip. I think I'll try and mess up the preferences some.

Tweaking with all those settings was funky, but ultimately fruitless. It's good to see the community came such a long way for the game regarless. I don't suppose anyone has ever tried updating the software renderer? ;)

UT will run okay in Wine, but you'll get a much better experience using the official Linux binaries included in the Loki installer here:

http://www.liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=51

If you have the GOTY edition but you're missing Disc 2 I think you need the non-GOTY installer. Don't bother updating to v451, that patch is only relevant for servers; however, I do recommend you untar v451 and use the updated OpenGLDrv.so. Don't forget to also download and run the bonus pack installer at the bottom of the page! You will run into a problem with libgtk on your modern Xubuntu system, but it's easy to fix and otherwise the installers should work fine.

After it's done... open a terminal, type 'sh ut' or './ut' without the halfquotes, and watch the magic happen.

With the v451 renderer you should be able to take advantage of S3TC textures and most of the other visual enhancements that Windows users enjoy. Adding maps and mods is done more-or-less the same way it's done on Windows. UMODs are the exception - for those you'll need UMOD Extractor. Run it with Wine, it'll unpack .umods so you can copy the files to their directories manually. Have fun :D

The missing packages and installation instructions can be found for 10.04 (and, I assume, also applicable to later versions of Ubuntu as the package versions have been frozen) here: http://http://www.margrave.myzen.co.uk/InstallUTonLinux.html

Installers, patches etc. can be found here: http://www.margrave.myzen.co.uk/Downloads.html

I have since observed the same issue in 'native' games. Another game had a few more config settings and I found out the following. The black stripes seem to be caused by mipmaps. The multicolor rainbow coat glitches occur when light maps are also enabled.

Sometimes mipmaps seem to work up-close and are only observed in the distance. Light maps never really appear to work in the distance. Disabling both works but makes me cry a little, deep inside. Fuck ATI and their non-existent support for legacy drivers.

Back in the Day I had this problem if I ran UT3 and then tried to go and run UT after that. Not sure if this has ever been fixed as I haven't installed UT3 in ages.
