UT Version 451?

v451 is an unofficial patch , but interesting for server as it fixes some server security problems .
I read several times that for clients (the players) , it is not the best thing to do to update UT to this unofficial v451.
v436 clients are totally able to join v451 servers without problems (in UT or in any mods like Infiltration too ) .

So stay in v436 is recommended if you are a client .

4.51 is very important for servers, but normaly the 4.36 clients should be able to join. The only problem i know of is that the Creatve UT4.36 EAX patch is incompatible with 4.51

Strange to say no to v451 for a server .
v451 fix some security issues for servers , so i think it is important for them.
v436 client is not affected , but v436 server has those security issues (remember lot of months ago , when epic admitted it , they patched UT2K3 , but not the older version of unreal engine so that is why v451 was created at first : to fix the security issue for UT server)

now , is it compatible or not with INF 2.9 , only sentry studios can tell

Well, you might get great results with the 451 patch. It might also crash constantly. What I mean is that 2.9 has not been tested extensivly with the 451 patch. I know some of the German testers played around with it for a while, but it hasn't gone through the normal testing procedure. If it works, great. If it doesn't, don't say I didn't warn you ;)

I use 4.51 in linux and everything works fine... In 4.36 taking screenshots always crashed INF.

Of course in times of 2.86 I had problems to connect to 4.36 servers with 4.51 client.

As Cleeus said, the problem you have may appear if you are using the Creative 436 UT patch (I know, because it happened to me). Uninstalling it will let you join version 451 servers. The only problem I have with jgkdo server is that it does not appear in the game browser (though i can see it with INFSpy). But still, it's annoying to have to use INFSpy.

Hmm, i never heard of it. We only use the infmaster.sobservers.com and infmaster2.sobservers.com but not the gamespy and epic UT master servers. maybe that could be a problem.
For me at least it also appears in the ingame browser.

Well I have the Creative 436 EAX patch and I can play fine on JgKdo. I think its one of those things that need Mulder and Scully to sort it out .

Oooh K
For the sake of a full-disclosure policy, here is a document about the specific flaws in the UT engine and protocol.

1st: read
2nd: read again
3rd: think about how many script kiddies are out there
4th: decide whether you want to have 4.36 or 4.51 on your server (4.51 fixes most of the issues)

Infact lot's of INF servers were already abused for a DDoS attacks (via the UDP spoofing).

Thats why.

I heard they were a few DoS problems with the Beta test servers a while ago. I just check the patch history on the authors web site, and running a server without it would be a big No No for me. That's not really a personal opinion, but more a professionnel one.

Eventhough I'm already convinced, I'll give a look at your documents Cleeus. That looks interesting.
