If I may ask how did you get UT to run on NT? I can't seem to make it work in anything but a windowed mode. Please help out.

cannonfotter i have a 450 PIII with 320MB PC100 SDRAM and V770 TNT2 Ultra on NT 4.0 sp6. i had the same problem in NT 4.0 when i had 192MB of ram.

The slowdown comes from using your paging file or "virtual memory" and unless your running Utlra 2 SCSI I would keep unreal out of there if at all possible. NT requires a lot more Physical memroy than 95,98,98SE. The easiest way is, if youve got the cash grab another 64MB of ram, in NT I have noticed on some of the larger maps it will suck up anywhere from 130-210MB!!! It will make a world of difference.

If not, take a look at the services you are running and see if you can live without a few while you are playing. Also, close any browsers or email clients you may have open. Open your task manager and go under performance, if youve got at least 170MB Physical Memroy available you should be fine in most levels. Even with 320MB mine still hits the page file every now and then in Gothic.

Oh, and ignore Fragmiester he is probably intimidated by NT...not being a plug and play OS and all. The truth is, other than NT needing a **** load of memory it is a superior OS in the graphics and networking department. And the internet is after all a BIG *** network.

Hope this helps.

Vadaar, if youve got a TNT based card grab the detonator drivers from nvidia and make sure you run the game in OpenGl not Direct3D.

that's funny. i run UT on NT4sp5 and it rocks. NT *was* developed for business but still has the nessecary support for most games. plus it is about 100x more stable than WIN9x. why don't you try to be helpful instead of an a-hole?

to the fellow(s) with the slow problem. have you tried starting UT in it's "safe mode" and disableing things like direct 3d sound? my system would hard lock in NT after about 10-15 minutes of gameplay until i did this. also try setting your default cache size in the UT.ini to and 4 megs below your system memory. i.e.256 system memory=252 cache size.

see you on the battlefied,

I have gotten UT to be playable. Make sure that the bare minium of services are running. Create a batch file to load UT with the highest priority ( Start /high d:\games\unrealtournament\system\unrealtournament.exe ). After that I am running OPEN GL @ 10x7 with both textures set to medium. Its still not quite as good as 98, but its getting there. I'll post anything else here I can find as far improveing UT under NT.

And for the Lag-Master, I hear they are working on a port of UT for your Vic 20. So cheer up, soon you too will be able to play.

here's what i have going on.

AX6BC+ mobo
PII350
416mgs ram(NT *IS* a hog!!)
Viper 330
3dfx Voodoo2-slightly overclocked(extra cooler fans)
NT4SP5

UT with patch 402
start UT, go to advanced options

AUDIO:
use 3dsound=false
use direct sound=false

the direct audio seems to be the key. maybe because NT/2000 doesn't like to let other proggies access hardware directly(?)

CacheSizeMegs=256 <--I was told to set this 4megs below your total system memory. your mileage may vary.

mine runs fabulous full screen. also play Unreal,QII, Half-Life on this box. If they would only give NT more DirectX support so i could play Rainbow6 on it too..(ahem)

It may not look as spectacular as some systems in gameplay but it's stable and fast.

hope this helps!

Hey **** you who said that i am jealous of NT Well first place i have built my own computer 3 times already At first it was a $300 hospital computer and then i upgraded it when i was twelve to a 133Mhz 64m ram 2x CDrom and windows 3.1 and ATI mach 64 2mb video and yes it sucked a dick. Then we got windows NT and i was playing duke 3d and man did that suck. Then just like a year or two ago i got a new case mother board with sound on it a ATI Rage Fury 32mb a 128 mb ram a 466 celeron ( oh just to tell you a celeron beat the hell out of a p3 well it depends if it is a 700p3 to a 450 celeron then the p3 is a slight faster.) Any way i got a 50x cdrom and windows 98. So back the **** up because i know what iam doing and Nt sucks maybe if you got that much ram then it may run smooth but that is a couple hundred down the drain. Just to tell you am 15 and i was born around computers so shut the **** up. Hey and i wouldn't doubt it if your one of those 20 year olds without a job and living with your parents.
Just a hint GET A LIFE

fragmiester. post when you get a clue. celerons and p3's have almost identical cores. but the sse makes the p3 a bit faster. onboard sound generally bites, ditto with most ati video cards. (fury maxx is ok it seems) nt is a decient os but was not coded with games in mind. and duke 3d rocked...especially for its time..

Ok Lag-Master Here's a clue.

I was also raised around computers. I got my first computer when I was 7. I have been using IBM PC's since 81 (I was 10). I have been using Novell since 87 (Double CNE working on my third). I haven't lived at home since I was 17. So looks like got one thing right. But a broken clock is right twice a day.

It is good to hear that you know how to put a PC together a PC. That just means that you might be able to get a 5-10 dollar an hour job. It is so nice to hear that I won't be supporting you with my Tax dollars.

Take your own advice. And when you grow up a little, look me up I might have a job for you.

before you even admitted you were 15 i was thinking 12...close enough huh. that's cool that you can build computers already and kind of understand what's going on. maybe someday when you grow up you can put that to use. but pulling attitude like that won't impress anyone except the other 12, i mean 15 year olds.

BTW, i'm almost 30 and a sys admin for a large midwestern city. 1500+ users. haven't lived at home since i was 18.
