this is totally bizarre and i am pulling my hair out.

Yesterday i was on a server and all of a sudden 60 seconds into a game my ut freezez up.
The only way to recover is to cntrl/alt/delete > End Task UnrealTournamnet "not responding". :(

i reconnect the the server and this happens over again.
I try 4 times same results.
So i try another server , same results.

Next i completely uninstall UT wipe it from existence, restart computer.
Reinstall fresh from CD, patching to 436. Installed enhanced ogl render "same config as i had last install worked fine for Years"

Boot up ut and i notice:
The screen randomly flashes a little bit in areas?
I join a server and start playing. 60 seconds in it freezez just like before.

    WTF? I CANT PLAY!???

    This is totally baffling me.
Is my graphics card going bad?:(

Odd thing. I get errors in Unreal 1 even though I could play it before too. :( Wonder if that has something to do with all the master server things...

Does it work with either the stock ogl driver or D3D?

Graphics and sound card and driver versions?
OS? (because you can run the enhanced OpenGL driver in WINE)
Does this problem show up in a local bot match?
Have you tried running a localhost dedicated server and then connecting to it?
Do you see a problem with other games?
Can you... Oh that'll do for a start, we can always ask more questions later. :)

    "only" changing the fan.

Check if your video drivers are up to date. Also see if you can stress-test your card, yeah. Check its temperatures and such... if it's overheating or the fan isn't blowing, that's certainly a bad thing. :p

I think it is the card.
I just updated the drivers and still same result.
I don't really play any other games on the pc.
    Specs:
    winxp pro sp2
    GForce FX 5200
I will swap out a graphics card and see what happens.

I have not switched cards yet but i did notice something really strange.
I opened my UT log and found a whole list of failure to loads errors.
But the strange thing is the stuff it is trying to load is not stuff that is on the server i tried to join? Why is it trying to load this stuff?

The "fail to load" messages all seem to refer to missing screenshots.

That's common enough with U & UT maps. I wouldn't worry about it.

Before swapping the graphics card, check to see that the fan is still working. A GPU that is cool enough in 2D but that fails after a few minutes in the hotter running 3D mode would be consistent with a failed or failing fan.

It would also be consistent with a component that has suffered some sort of age/thermal related drift that is exhibited when the part (naturally) heats up in 3D mode.

    Scuttlebutt and scurrilous rumour
has it that even 5xxx series Nvida cards are affected by the thermal cycling problem that is known to have affected (at least) 8xxx mobile parts. A 5200 is what, 4 perhaps even 5 years old? It could just be an age related failure. :(

Maybe extra logging has been enabled? (I'm not near a UT installation so I can't check the exact name but I'm referring to all of the commented out logging options near the top of the UnrealTournament.ini file)

Actually, you're going up in most areas - though the GF4 is only DX8.1 compliant, and only supports PS1.3 and VS1.1.

Still, a better AGP card isn't too expensive, but realistically, you should probably consider upgrading soonish. Not too many AGP videocards are being made anymore.

They are stoping? What is the new thing?

It's been a long time since i have been in the know about the latest.
A new card "decent one" would probably run around 4-5 bills right?
Why don't i just buy a new computer?

    PCI-Express, of course.

And yeah, you can build a pretty good computer for about 5 bills, assuming you keep some stuff like Monitor, Keyboard, case, etc.

Last September I put together a UT3-ready PC for just over $1000 US:
    http://darkpulse.project2612.org/Hardware%20List%202.txt

Of course, the prices on a lot of these things would be lower, nowadays, and some of them would be pretty bad picks unless cash is tight. (You'd be better off with a E8400 CPU now, for example, and the 9800 GTX+ or 9800 GX2, or the ATI 4870/4870 X2 if you must stick with Radeons.)

Just make sure your motherboard can handle the stuff - a good PCI-Express card will need at least one or two special power connectors, and if your PSU doesn't have those, you'll need to buy one that does or some converters. Also pay attention to the amount of IDE Devices the motherboard can hold, if you're not using Serial ATA Drives - This motherboard could only hold two IDE devices, for example, meaning I was out of luck with my CD/DVD burner until I bought a SATA one. (and later got SATA drives to alleviate that problem entirely.)

But yeah, a new PC is pretty cheap to build now, and a system like mine runs UT3 just peachy at max details at 1024x768. Well over 100 FPS in most maps.

Hey K, do you play anything else besides UT? If not, keep what you have. I agree with Dark Pulse as I mentioned to you on another forum that your ti4200 is way more than you'll ever need for awesome gameplay in UT. That is even true all the way up to UT2K4. That ti4200 may not handle as good or stop as fast as your gforce5200 did but the ti4200 has lots more horsepower I'm pretty sure.

Yes, you can build a PC cheap these days if you try to keep and reuse most of your peripherals like the monitor, keyboard, mouse, sound card, network card, video card and cd drives. Usually, all you really need for a new rig is a mobo with a processor, new ram and a better power supply. You can usually buy a sweet combo mobo and processor for around $150 and tons of ram for about $60 and a great power supply for between $50 and $80 so add it all up and your looking at $260 - $290 to seriously upgrade your PC. After you do that, then look at a new video card if you think you still need one.

Note that yes, AGP is considered legacy hardware now. Almost all new mobos are built with PCIe slots for the video card and just like AGP, there are different types of PCIe formats already. So darn, you have to buy a new video card too if you upgrade the mobo. You should be able to land a really sweet video card for under $200. That brings your new PC total to just under $500 and puts your PC in the top 25% in relation to the rest of the world. CYA!

Yeah, she'll need a new video card, period, but the good news is ones that can run UT3 on max details are only about $200-$300, assuming she doesn't want to go all uber-high rez. :)

That said, I'm perfectly happy at 1024 with max details. Since I have a CRT, 1024 gives me a 100 Hz Refresh rate, and my monitor can only do up to 1600x1200 anyway. Even then the game gets about 60 FPS with max details.

Just don't count on AA in UT3 unless you're on Vista, or you use MSAA, which has a *HUGE* performance hit.

That said, a good Dualcore Intel CPU (Don't bother with AMD, they simply can't compete with Core 2) is about $200, figure $100 for a good motherboard, $200-300 for a good videocard and maybe $100 for a good 4 gigs of DDR2-800 RAM. That's about $600-700, which for a pretty kickass gaming PC is damn cheap. If she needs stuff like video editing or whatever, a Quad-Core isn't that much more expensive, and it could probably be overclocked to the Dualcore speed level, but UT3 really doesn't need much more than a dualcore to run good.

Of course, there might be more unknowns in there as well - PSU can easily cost another $50-100 if hers isn't PCI-Express ready (If she's using a AGP system still, I doubt it is unless she replaced it fairly recently) and she might need to get a new case and/or new hard drives, which could add another couple hundred. But those are optional, whereas the PSU will likely be required, or at least converters.

I'd recommend at least 500w for a trouble-free experience. If you can get higher wattage, great, but keep an eye on the efficiency of the PSU if it lists it. 85% or higher will suffice.

Of course, if it's going to take you some time to get money for it, and you want to ride the latest and greatest, the new Core i7s are coming out this month. Those motherboards need DDR3 RAM, though, but they utterly thrash Core 2 performance levels - something like 25% faster singlethreaded and 40% faster multithreaded, clock-for-clock. They also have Hyperthreading (Which Core 2s don't) and on-die memory controllers (Which, again, Core 2s don't and was the one advantage AMD still had over Intel.)

it all depends of the screen display and resolution , no need to buy a high end card if you playing UT3 on 1024x768 LCD19' for exemple , you will need more CPU power instead.. its part of the myth "GPU limited or CPU limited" , higher resolutions needs more horsepower from graphic cards so you need a good one in that case ..

as Herm and Darkpulse said , good computer is now affordable , if you pick the right hardware choice .. i dont know the prices in US though , so i cant compare with us there in europe .. maybe that could help , take this list and look how it cost in US , i think you will be surprised ..

    proco - Core 2 duo E6850 ( or E8400 , both are 3.0ghz )
    M/b - Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard
    RAM - 2x1024 DDR2 dual channel kit PC6400 ( corsair ? )
    PSU - Corsair VX450
Videocard ( depend of your screen resoultion )-
    -8800GT/S² ( from 1024x768 to 1680x1050 )
    -HD4850 ( from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200 )
    -4870X2 ( up to 1920x1200 )

and if you only want to change the videocard , i can remember the 8600GTS and HD3850 are the latest and fastest ones in AGP ..
