UnrealMUD - High-Concept and Recruitment

High Concept
This modification is going to give new life into Multi-User Dungeons. Staying faithful to tried-and-tested MUD code bases, this modification is going to bring a persistent, immersive experience to the players and the administrators.

Features
  • Each UnrealMUD will be different depending on the intentions of the administrators of the respective UnrealMUD.
  • UnrealMUD is written to be scalable to host upon the vision of the administrator(s). A small village for friends and cohorts to socialize in; a complex dungeon to battle nefarious beasts and gain untold treasures; a vast frontier for clans to cross to rage battle in the homeland of rival clans, anything is possible!
  • UnrealMUD features the ability to host virtual server clusters! What is that? UnrealMUD can support multiple copies of the UnrealMUD program running simultaneously and working together to provide increased scalability and reliability. What does this mean? One area of the world may physically reside on a computer in California while another area is on a computer that is in Oregon. This technology assists by cutting back the technology requirements of the servers.
  • UnrealMUD is written from the ground on up to support easy modification to achieve whatever the administrators wish. Skills, spells, weapons, monsters, areas, textures, architecture, non-player characters, player characters, sounds, etc. will be modifiable. Create anything from a traditional medieval hack-n-slash to a futuristic post-apocalyptic world.
  • UnrealMUD is persistent! The worlds in UnrealMUD live and breathe 24 hours a day/7 days a week! Player characters (and even NPCs if you so wish!) gain stats, levels, skills, spells, etc. and retain them when they log in again! Playing the game actually means something!
  • UnrealMUD has improved communication channels. What good is playing with others when you can't communicate properly? UnrealMUD features customizable communication channels so you can keep good comm.
  • The UnrealMUD code base will feature Combat Action. What is that? Combat Action takes the boredom out of traditional combat-systems in MUDs and MMORPGs, and gives the player the ability to react in real-time. The player is now moving and swinging the sword, strategically positioning the character and attacking tactically. Of course, you still can autoattack but it would probably be more beneficial to attack with Combat Action.
  • UnrealMUD possesses the ability to have customizeable UIs! Now the administrators, and even the players!, can easily create their own User Interfaces to play their favorite UnrealMUDs!
  • UnrealMUD utilizes the technology of powerful, fast SQL-style databases to access and store its worlds.

Player Motivation
Players exist in a persistent world and grow more powerful by earning experience. As a character grows more in power, more options open to that character - battling other player characters, invading rival homelands, crafting incredible items, raiding the lairs of epic monsters - the opportunities are only confined by imagination!

Genre
A combination of elements from roleplaying games, action games, and strategy games.

Target Customer
Primarily past and present MUDders and MMORPGers, though it will appeal across a broad spectrum of interests dependent upon the flavor of the individual UnrealMUDs.

Competition
None! - It is a mod - what is there to 'compete' against?! :)

Unique Selling Points
As hinted under features, UnrealMUD possesses strong potential to expand into a commercial venture.

Target Hardware
PC platform.

Design Goals
Expandability: Permit the immortals of the UnrealMUDs to create their own worlds and gameplay elements.
Dedication: Provide the necessary tools and support to facilitate the achievement and success of this project.
Community: Create a community-base that helps motivate and drive UnrealMUD.

I hope this document introduced you to a bit of the driving force behind UnrealMUD. And, yes, as the title of this message indicates we are currently expanding our team slightly. It is a wonderfully organized and guided project, as it has been our experience to achieve successful results. Without further ado, what the UnrealMUD team currently is seeking:

Assistant Coder - Seeking an individual with advanced skills in C/C++. Knowledge of other languages and scripts (Java, Javascript, PHP) is a plus. Basic or intermediate knowledge of UnrealScript is only necessary as the transition from experience in C/C++ will be flawless.

Additional 3D Modeller - Seeking an individual with at least intermediate experience in Maya and/or 3D Studio Max. The individual should ideally also possess some skill in basic animation. The ability to create textures and conceptual drawings is also a plus, but not required.
